I've got a Samsung R20 laptop. This has a "Atheros AR5006X" 54mbps (well thats what i get next to the router - e-sites have it as a 108mbps card ) wireless card according to device manager, which i presume is a Mini-PCI device.

It's networked up to a Netgear DG834GT router, which can do 108mbps.

The main problem is, when the lappy is in a certain room (which it is nearly all the time), network speeds drop through the floor. For example I was downloading a linux distro earlier, in the rest of the house i was getting 540kbps. as soon as i went in that certain room, 40kbps. This is obviously very annoying, and I've heard rumours that these wifi cards aren't very good. I tried connecting with a belkin PCMCIA 11.N wifi card, and this fixed the problem. But i want something internal - i use my PCMCIA port all the time so that's a real issue.

Firstly i wish to upgrade this laptop to at least 108mbps, if not 11.n, and secondly get an internal card that is better for range/penetration.
I dont want to spend silly cash on it though... Anyone got any ideas on a card that'd be better?

many thanks :D

EDIT: or should i just try to fit a larger antenna to my router.. or even double up the antennas? i saw a site once selling antenna doublers... according to goggle, my router has a 2dB antenna.. would fitting say a 5db antenna (i can get these for cheap) help it any?
