Hi everyone,

I recently built a new pc over the weekend and all is running fine but I was interested in trying to overclock or possibly unlock a core if I was lucky enough.

I looked around on the internet on how to do it and tried but I didnt feel comfortable trying to fix my problems I had incase I made a mistake as this is my first time.

I am using a MA477T Asus motherboard, 4GB RAM 1333Mhz, ATI 5770. I turned AAC on, left it on auto, then enabled Unleashing which then gave me the core unlock options either manual or auto up to 6 cores. The problem I have is the computer restarts after exiting the BIOS then doesnt power up fully. The power light comes on as does the all fans but nothing else. I then have to turn it off from the PSU until the light goes out on the motherboard then switch it back on to get into the BIOS. Is this just saying the 4th core is bad and not to bother or am I missing something?

I looked into it being the voltage but I was unsure about what I was adding, whether the voltage over CPU was the actual setting or adding that voltage to the stock voltage...

I dont mind if I cant unlock a 4th I did after all buy a 3 but I just want to know for sure lol. I may be interested in overclocking it slightly anyway.

Does anyone know if this processor will bottleneck with the 5770 running games or will it be ok as it is, as thats the main reason for me trying.

Thanks for any help.

You may have to increase the volts little by little towards 1.5v if it wont boot then the 4th core is bad, what resolutions will you be playing at with the 5770? I dont think the x3 will bottleneck a 5770 anyway.

It you can't get to windows at all extra voltage will most likely not help (though there no harm in trying). I recommend lock the core back up and try to overclock, with even a cheap Coolmaster Hyper TX3 you should be able to get 3.5-3.8GHz.

Hi,

Thanks for replies.

I will be running at 1360x768. I am planning on playing FFXIV and managed a benchmark of 3452 on low, and 2466 on high which is default.

When I bought the parts I chose a cpu cooler as I thought I would try overclocking. I don't have the money at the moment for an expensive cpu. I have the X3 440 connected to a Titan Fenrir, will this be good enough?

I thought about upping the voltage but was scared I would fry it. Do I just set it in small increments until 1.5v and go no higher?

At that low resolution you will get a small bottle neck from the CPU. As for the voltage if you are just trying to stabilise the extra core put it straight to 1.5 and if it works lower it as far as you can. For over clocking increase it as you need to to maintain stability.

Is there any cpu thats worth buying that isn't too expensive of I run into problems with this one? I can save up money for one that's not insanely expensive but a good one to have.

I am going to attempt to unlock/overclock this one anyway. It's fast enough at the moment.
