Athlon II x4 760k worth replacing haswell i3?

Seen an almost complete system for £70 which is only appealing as it has a areocool DS case which I want to swap my current system in, I'm just wondering whether keeping the 760k over the i3 4160 be worth the bother?

I know I can get an i5 or i7 for mine and 760k pretty max for fm2+, but I'm not worried about that, my concern would be whether it would perform better or not as its a quad where as mine is only quad through virtual reality as such, the amd board is a msi military class 4, don't know which of the 3 I've read(if not been updated since) about it is, but likely a better board that my Intel.

I haven't been on my computer in a month or so which means no play time with 'the division' so I haven't done anything since the like first update, so I have no idea if anything performance related been changed, but want to get back in to it again and do plan on more newer games at some point.

I did figure the i3 might come out on top regardless of upgrade paths, it really is a great chip, I'm still buying this system as I want the case, I just wanted to get advise on the processor, not many quads come in my paths and the last one I had was a 0step q6600, but only played crysis lol and that was a secondary system. I figured a proper quad would go nicely with my 270x, but sounds like this 760k could hold back just like my i3 does.

I have the system, but currently swapping round the parts so not tested anything yet.

I was googling the motherboard for the AMD and was looking at the support list and there is a vast amount of better processors for the board, like the 860k I assume and A10 7850k as the board is FM2+.

Msi A78M-E35 military class 4 is the board, sounds good and goes beyond 16gb ram if required which my Intel tops at 16, but is it actually any better than my asus H81M-Plus to stick to amd ?

I don't plan on buying a new Intel board as this one has good overclock features and generally a nice board, so I'm in 2 minds.

As you can see(possibly lol) I own both(amd setup on floor) and while my haswell has 16gb and a 270x, I am going to test the amd for comparison with its 750ti once I figure out why 8gb stick is only showing 4gb on a 64bit Windows.


While I could've picked up a i5 quad for what I've spent on the amd build(£20 for cx430) the upgrade wasn't part of the option, I needed to get a suitable case for my system as I haven't used it in couple months from work and no place to set it up and I thought quad amd setup was a bonus compared to what I saw and get to trial it back to back with my haswell and so the cpu upgrade isn't an option any time soon as I am not bothered. I was just curious about whether the proper quad be any good against the virtual quad i3.

turns out shop i got the ram sold me part of an 8gb kit for single 8gb price, so i got 4gb for price of 8gb because they idiots

ha yeah i own both, the amd side came with the case that i wanted, figured it was a bonus for the price....

yeah i know technically id be comparing the 750ti to the 270x, but i had the 750ti on my intel board and i ran it with BF4 and the FPS for high was like 40-60 which was not really too different to the 270x where on a norm i get between 40-60fps or and sometimes over 60/70, but that was awhile ago so memory is vague, but the 750 score was on a 19" 1440x900 where as i normal game on a 22" 1920x1080 both at 59/60hz.


the only reason i cant put the 270x with the 760k is simply because the cx430 cant support twin 6 pin which the radeon needs and too much effort swapping supplies around, but that doesnt matter anyways, its what the end result be that counts which you would know the 270 will better the 750 just by how much exactly.


i benched my haswell on the division with that benchmark feature, it wouldnt let me screen shot so ill have to link the video play.tv recorded, but that test was done with 12gb ram as i replaced 8gb 1600mhz stick with a 1333mhz 4gb for testing(going in the amd build), so i dont know if that will have much effect and once i finishing updating the amd system(windows updates) i will get odd games on there to compare.

Forget AMD.

I'd upgrade to an i5. You haven't mentioned if the i3 is overclocked?

sorry didnt think i needed to ha, it is stock as you cant overclock the i3 processors, the board has some good overclock features, just obviously no use where as the 760k can be overclocked, just how much to make it worthwhile over a i5 in the future is questionable.

There's so many variables that will affect your results I can't even predict what your final conclusion will be ?

the final conclusion is basically which one stays and which one goes as the whole idea of this was to build a gaming computer for selling after keeping the one thing i wanted(the aerocool ds case) and the for sale computer will be mated with the 750ti and cx430 etc that i purchased, no way am i selling my 270x, 16gb ram, seasonic psu.


i am currently downloading the division on the amd build so will put that through tests shortly, see how the 760k & 750ti fairs up to i3 & 270x.


it is also for a bit of fun as ive never hand chance to make a decent back to back performance comparison with my haswell and for youtube vdeos

I'll say it again - the 270X is way faster than the 750 Ti (at least 10-15 FPS faster on BF4 at 1080p ultra). Whichever machine has it in will do better, so you're wasting your time.

I would say do an i3 + 270X vs. X4 + 270X comparison, or don't bother. Test them outside the case then when you're done you can put all the best bits into the case you like and sell the rest.

ha thanks for the advise, but im not just doing to for keeps, i want to test the performance out to compare in general, i know there wasnt a huge difference between the 270x and the 750ti with my i3 in BF4, i need to fire the game up with the 270 to recall as it was couple months ago, but i am also going to test the processors for comparison too.

i know whichever i keep the 270x will excel its performance, but as i also said its too much of a pain to swap everything round as the DS is a bit of a pain to work with compared to the K350 coolermaster, it wont all be a waste of time in the end result.


i have pcie adapters that came with my 270x and seasonic psu, would i be able to hook one of them to the cx430 or is that power supply simply not strong enough for the likes of a 270x?
