Athlon s939 upgrade question

Would I see any real gains moving from a Athlon 64 3200+ (s939) to a 4000+ one?

Not really interested in upgrading the whole system but if I can squeeze a little more out of this one for a few ££ then I would.

At this stage of the game I wouldn't bother. If you wanted a cheap upgrade and you managed to get a x2 version for cheap, even a 3800 x2, then that might be worth it but it's not worth the money that it would probably cost.

Mostly just web browsing and watching films and series etc. What made me ask is I just got the latest blood bowl game and the load times are ticking me off. I'm not looking to upgrade the whole system, I'm not that bothered about the game but I thought if I could spend a few quid then fine.

My system is:

Windows XP
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.01ghz
1.5gb Ram - The other area I was looking to upgrade.
Radeon X800 GT 128mb

The spec for the game says:

Minimum system requirements:
OS: WINDOWS XP SP2 / VISTA SP1
Processor: PENTIUM4 2.4GHZ / ATHLONXP 2400+
3D Graphics card: 128 MB 100% DirectX® 9 and shaders 2.0 compatible (NVIDIA GEFORCE 6600 / ATI RADEON X700 or higher)*
RAM Memory: 1 GB (XP) / 2 GB (VISTA)

Faster CPU wouldnt make your load times any quicker.

Maybe get a new HD, something like a Seagate 7200.12 works wonders for old systems.

And if you're running at 1.5Gb ram, then chances are they arent running in dual channel.

Try overclocking your CPU too.

Unless you can get new bits for next to nothing, I wouldn't bother. I used to have almost maxed out s939 agp machine up until 5 months ago (Opty 170 @ 2.5-2.75 + 3850 gc + 2G mem) and it just wasn't worth it any more.

Still good for my nephew, though :-)

If you still want to go that route, try with a fresh XP install, check the services running (there are a lot of XP optimisation guides) and check what's been loaded during the startup. Running with no anti virus also helps but the risk is yours.

S939 CPU's are ridiculously expensive at the moment.

They were worse when new, my OCuk reciept from years ago....

as has been said a new hard drive would help. western digital black or similar. cpu would help too a 4000+ single core maybe with a smidgen of overclocking to 2.6/2.8 or a duel core for £40ish. 3gb of ram too sir. you're looking at 100ish
