After some searching around I've still not found a definitive answer and thought maybe someone here would know. I have an X2 4200+ which at idle with C'n'Q on has one core at 24C and one at 41C according to CoreTemp.

What temp difference would you expect? I'm thinking removing the heatsink and reapplying the AS5 and refitting is the next task...

I have 2 diff x2 one has a core diff of 8c the other chip has about 10c so thats pretty normal. I did lap one (not very well i might add) but the temp gap went down to about 5c....if you brave enough look up lapping cpu and coolers on the tube if your bothered mate

My main thinking was overclocking, as apparently the X2 4200+ is only good for 65C. 41C at idle doesn't really give me much room to play with...

my brother in law has the same issue with the 4800+ mate... he has refitted the cooler with mx2 and made no difference. he has also just fiitted a freezer pro 64 and still has the same issue. leads me to believe there is a problem with temp programs reading the correct temp. 100% stress test with prime and core 1 increases by 6C and the other by 15c! the 6c increase does not seem correct imo.

It's hard to tell. If it experiences no instability at full load on both cores (ie Cinebench 10, etc) it's probably a faulty sensor. It's Highly uusual to experience such a vast differnece in temp between cores.
Possible causes : it's genuinely a badly made CPU (v rare)
the temp sensor is faulty (somewhat rare but by no means unheard of).
fault with motherboard.
software reporting fault (probably most likely on average)
