athlon xp mobile to opteron should i upgrade ?????

I currently have an athlon xp 2500m @2.3 GHz
now that you can pick them up cheap second hand im contemplating upgrading to an opteron @ close to 3GHz + a DFI motherboard

i dont play games at all

THG charts suggest i could expect about a 25% increase

so to those of you that did this upgrade was it worth it?

What do you use your PC for?

That would be quite a jump, but what do you use your comp for, as the performance gains might not be that great depending on the software you run.

Fair enough, that would be a significant upgrade then.

As good as the axp mobiles were, they are no match for cpu's these days

Anything dual core would be good for video editing, Conroe being the best, then X2 then opteron although im not sure, someone else will know which is best between X2 and Opteron

opteron is best. since all dual core opterons have 1meg cache per core.

i made the jump from my [email protected] to my current opteron [email protected] and its a massive difference in video encoding and rar compression. games and stuff i did not notice much difference in probably cuz my 6800nu was the main limitation.

There should be a fair few cheap second hand opterons popping up next week, due to everyone getting there new cheapy x2's.... So perhaps a second hand cpu upgrade would save you a few £££'s...

that was the plan should be able to get a secondhand dfi MB + an opteron which is known to clock to near 3GHZ for £140
maybe even cheaper in a couple of weeks time once conroes really take off

should be able to reuse my 2x512mb pc3200 geil value and hard drives and optical drives
may need a new gfx card if motherboard is only pcie and possibly a new psu
