Can anyone tell me what a safe/normal operating temp is for this CPU. Mine is at around 71C under load.

Mine was 51C max load on stock cooling when I had it. Clean the gunk off the CPU and cooler, then use arctic silver 5.

Aye, I had the 2700 several years ago, I remember it doing Seti 24/7 at the time, max temp was in the low 50s.

Do as sr4470 suggest, the cooler is probably caked with dust :D

Yeah 71C is fairly high, and it does not seem normal for a .13 cpu, for a .18 late generation and not cooled properly palomino yes :D Clean the heatsink and reapply thermal compound, could have dried out.

Max temp for the 2400+ is 85c, not had mine for a few years now, but I think mine ran about 60c under full load

Why do people always quote that? Thats the max temp before predicted thermal failure! (i.e cpu no workie no more) not the maximum running temp, and most cpus start to go unstable long before that. Also the reported temperature may not be a truly accurate reading of the true temp which can be higher or lower.

^ stop being pedantic

If you dont like the quote of 85c............take it up with AMD, that info is off their site :p

I'm not, people tend to believe the 85C quote is meant to be the maximum running temperature, its not, its the max temp before the cpu breaks down. This can lead people to believe they can get load temps of 75C for e.g and be 'safe'. Same for a lot of cpus, people take the max temp before cpu meltdown as the max temp they can run.

Artic Silver or equivilant makes a hell of a lot of difference! Although that may have been beacause there was virtually nothing on my cpu to start with.

(Sent laptop off to repair via a certain astronomical electronics chain, got it back and the P4 Northwood in it was overheating at 75oc. Cracked the thing open, fan was almost falling out, and when I took off the heatsink there was a tiny bit of white goo which was barely covering anything. Stuck some Akasa AK-450 I brought in town (needed it asap, otherwise would have ordered off ocuk) and it brought load temps down to sub 50oc.)
