I've to build a htpc for a friend and it's socket 754 based.

He's coming over from the states and is bringing back a Athlon64 3000+ (Venice core) with him for the system.

Anyone had experience of these chips?

There are socket 754 CPUs with the Venice core but they are very rare indeed (I've been after one for ages  ).

If your friend does manage to get hold of one it's likely to be a pretty good overclocker, people have got some impressive results from them.

A better possibility could be a socket 754 Sempron which will overclock just as well. Its basically a Venice core AMD64 CPU but with a smaller cache (256K rather than 512K).

Hope this helps :)

There are 754 venice 3000+ and also 3200+ although i have never seen the latter and none of the 3000+ venice's for a while now. If it is a Venice then as Roll says it will be a good clocker with a decent motherboard. Even if it's not a Venice it may still be a good clocker. I built a pc around a 3000+ Newcastle/Winchester (can't remember which now) on 754 and i got that easily up to 2.4ghz. It is still running at that now with no problems at all.

I thought that venice core's were only 939's as well. It'll have to be a wait and see thing.

If it's not compatible then I'll just have to punt it and get a sempron. It's only for a sff htpc so not worried about clocking it much. Just handy long term.
