Hi Guys,

I currently own an ATi 1950 XTX and was wondering if it's worth upgrading i.e. sell now while it still has a bit of value before DX10 becomes established and I can't shift it or hold onto it.

I play all my games at 1600 * 1050 with all settings up high and no issues with all the latest games. With all the DX10 capable games coming shortly I'm considering the upgrade.

Is the 8800 GTS 640mb really that much more powerful then my card? i.e. wortht he upgrade, will it struggle at them speeds. Was considering the 2900 but seeing the reviews I don't think I will bother.

Also I have a 500w PSU , will that bottleneck power?

Your PSU will be fine for any new graphics you care to buy. I'm in the same boat as you (well nearly, I have an x1900xt 512MB) and as far as I can see the best course of action is to hang on to our current cards until games that we want to play are using DX10 and in a substantial way (some early DX9 games looked no better in DX9 than in DX8 mode).

Wait and see is the best bet right now if your current card can handle all you throw at it performance wise. Which at 1600x1200 and under resolutions the x19-- series seems to.

Yep that's a good point, no doubt by the end of the year there will be even better versions of the cards out or maybe new Nvidia ones.

I can't stand review sites getting, results are so different to the next one. Though I follow Guru3D a lot.

Interesting seeing the X1950XTX in these tests http://guru3d.com/article/Videocards/431/18/ Page 19, 21, 23

The X1950XTX keeps up with the 8800GTS, yes it can range from 10 to 5 or so fps in some games. Sometimes a little more, but thats not really worth it shelling out high £2-3xx to gain 10 - 25fps more. Seriously though who would be able to tell with that without looking at scores.

Probably it will be when a few more DX10 cards have been released, but for a small jump like that I don't see its worth the money.

It's probably different for people jumping from lower spec cards, its going to be a big boost.

My motto is don't upgrade unless framerates are unplayable. No point keeping on throwing money towards a PC if it's perfectly playable.

I'm in the same boat too.

ATi X1950XTX 512MB + OCZ 520W powerstream + 350W Enermax (just for the XTX - I kid you not!). My system runs completely stock.

I play 95% Battlefield 2142 which is DX9. I don't think will change in the next 6 months so perhaps I'll be keeping hold of this a little longer - with a little OC perhaps.

Personally I wouldn't bother upgrading from a 1950xtx. Still a very capable card, hold your horses for 6 months or so and you will likely be able to pick up a 8800GTX a bit cheaper.

Cheers guys, thats what I thought.

Will keep the cash in the bank I think till around christmas time :p

I am waiting for UT2007 to come out at least before making any new purchases personally as you will have a better idea of what cards perform better on dx10 games :)

Thats game is never going to be released, so you might as well just get a new card.
If you are waiting on UT3, then maybe you have a point!

:p
/me runs after smart-ass comment

OMG, this forum, yes this one here just agreed with me when stating that someone shouldn't upgrade to an 8800 series graphics card.

am trying to deside is i should get a 8800gts 320mb or just get a X1950pro 512MB £115 just for now and mybe near christmas when the dx10 cards are cheaper and the games are out then get one then

If your old, current card doesn't hack it anymore, then by all means get a 8800 over a X1900Pro. As its a no brainer and worth the extra wonga, but getting an 8800 if you already own a X1950 that does the job, isnt worth it.
