From a HTPC aspect, which card is better? Must be passive with low power consumption & heat. Don't need HDMI as av pre-amp doesn't have HDMI input anyway, DVI-HDMI video is all that I need. Mainly picture quality for video (is there a difference still?) and video acceleration. Using MCE + FFDSHOW. Do you need to use specific movie players/codecs for videocard accelerated video?

8500 has better video acceleration abilities, lower cpu usage thanks to purevideo hd. 2400 has avivo which doesn;t work half the time.

also take note that a 8500 hardly has any power saving over a 8600. around 5 watts less. its best to get the 8600gt as a minimum point.

er the 2400 pro and XT both have UVD which according to this guru3d review are much better at HDTV decoding/playback than the nvidia counterparts.

If you are the kind of person that hardly plays games but occasionally does so at a resolution of 10x7, the 2400 series can be enough for you. But honestly, it's not a gamers card at all. You get to have fantastic HD decoding capabilities along with it, it's however a very budget card and starting at 49 USD, honestly you just can't go wrong with that considering what excellent features you are offered in both 2D and 3D functionality.
