I currently use the Nvidia 3D Vision solution with a 280gtx and a sumsung 2233rz 120hz monitor. The 3D works great

I am looking at upgrading the gfx card in the future. ATI's current offerings appear to offer more bang for buck at the 200 price range, so are tempting.

I have seen lots of talk about ati being able to use 3rd party drivers, however I cant find any info on supported hardware. Only lots of talk from manufacturers which only turns out to be vapourware.

Is 3D actually possible with ati cards on a 120hz monitor? in real life, not just theoretically - has anyone actually got it working?
what hardware is available?

Ati doesn't offer direct 3D support ala Nvidia.
You will need to get a monitor or tv that has glasses already like viewsonic one.

Yes, you'd need (for the Nvidia-like set-up):

120Hz screen
Shutter glasses (which are available separately)
3rd party 3D drivers - either iZ3D or DDD (TriDef) - the DDD drivers are better

Or, you could use something like a Zalman 3D monitor, which doesn't use the same method as the 3D Vision, but has limited viewing angles. The 21.5" monitor can be found for ~£300 and the 24" monitor for ~£400. They do not require expensive glasses (extra glasses are something like £8 per pair), but they will require 3rd party 3D glasses.

To be honest, until AMD release their own decent 3D drivers, it's not worth it, as the TriDef and iZ3D drivers only support DX9, and are not updated regularly enough.

Thanks for the replys guys.

I've been having a good read on ati's and iz3d's forums and the conculsion is that 120hz + shutter glasses + ati, is just all talk. As there are no products that actually work together. The biggest problem is that there are no 3rd party glasess that work with ati/iz3d/ddd on a 120hz monitor.

It does however look like some 3D tv's and projectors are supported only if they come with there own glasses solution.

Well problem solved. I'll stick to what I know.. I've been very impressed with the NV solution. Just plug and play.

Spend money on iz3d software and monitor. Its more expensive and your buying a licence to a program (which i dont like) but it works on every card.
Iv tried iz3d, its not as finished off as nvidias 3d vision and i think nividias 3d vision is finished off...

I'd get a pair of gtx570s and stick with 3D Vision personally. The extra £10-20/5-10% performance either way is nothing to having a setup that works as it's supposed to with good support. I get the feeling that the iz3d software isn't as good or as well supported, it seems hassle for the sake of it, personally I'm loving 3D Vision, it's reignited my interest in PC gaming and works excellently.

I'd agree with Rroff on this. I've used Iz3d anaglyph drivers on my ATI machine and while not bad, the software isn't as slick as nvidia's offerings.
