sorry for asking this noob qustion but is there a way of making the fan spin faster to cool down a ati hd4850 in the setting of amd catalysy 11.8

If you've never cleaned out the dust from the heatsink you may find a good 10 degrees in reduced temps just by giving it a clean. I did with my 1 year old 4890.

The fan should self regulate and be going like the clappers if it's hitting 107 degrees. You should ensure that Manual fan control is unchecked in the performance section of the CCC software.

Try Speedfan, i always used that to set my 4850's fan speed, although as Tealc said, it should self regulate it's rpm as it gets hotter so if it's hitting 107 and the fan doesnt sound like a small hurricane then something isnt right.

In MSI AfterBurner click on settings, then click on the Fan tab. From there tick "Enable user defined..." and set up a fan profile. Then click ok and the 4850 fan will run according to the fan profile. This tends to conflict with CCC for me so I have to uncheck "Enable AMD Overdrive" for this to work.

Now if you want to use CCC, the manual fan control will only allow you to set a fixed speed, no matter what the temps are. Simply open up CCC, expand the performance tab, then click AMD Overdrive. Tick "Enable AMD Overdrive" then click "Enable Manual Fan Control". Then move the slider to how fast you want to fan to spin. Click Apply and the fan will begin to run on it's new set speed.

Another thing to consider, sometimes on certain 3rd party cards it's impossible to software control the fan due to the manufacturer possibly locking this option. If this is the case, you may have to consider modifying the card's BIOS. However I have no experience with this, but I'm sure others on this forums have.
