hey all, im building a new system (1st build actually) and i need some advice on graphics cards and im sure there are a lot of people on this forum that know what they are talking about

my question is, what would be a better option for a graphics card? im torn between the two, but i cant see much of a difference between the 4850 and the 4870 other than how much cheaper the 4850 is...

could anybody give some advice on which would be the better graphics card to go with? this is for a gaming pc with a q6600, 4gb ram, vista 64bit and a Asus P5Q Pro Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard unless i find a better one.

cheers all

resolution is 1280x1024...

i have no clue if that is good or horrible so hoping you guys can help me out

if need be and this monitor is terrible, i'll have to look into a new monitor aswell... heres hoping i dont need to though

At your res i would and so would everyone else get a 4850, if you get a new monitor and it runs native at 1660x and above get a 4870

I might suggest getting a 8800GT as a cheaper alternative, realistically theres not much difference, esp at that resolution, and the Q6600's fine. I'm sticking with mine till Nahalem comes out and then wait till the prices come down.

depends mate, i would get the 4870 imo, at the res you play at just now the 4850 would be more than enough but then you never know you may buy a monitor next month that runs at 1920x1200 then you would need the 4870.

so i say go with the 4970 and crank everything up in everygame you play and admire the beuty.

as for the q6600 i agree with the previous post with the 45nm, even the new duel cores hammer the crap out the q6600 for games.

so with the resolution my monitor is playing at the moment, there's no point gettin a 4870 because it can't be utilised right?

i'm going to look into it a bit more...

i have heard before that a dual core is better for gaming than the Q6600 quad core, but im planning to hopefully overclock it to 3GHz, and i though quad core would be more future proff than a dual core..

It all really depends on what sort of money you want to spend. Thanks to a redundancy payment I'm personally going for a Q9550 and a 4870 for my new build, but that's because I have the money available. You can't go wrong with a Q6600 and a 4850 imo.

OP i would suggest the 4850 as the best card to buy.
At that res it will run everything really well and with lots of eye candy ontop as well.
If you wanted the 4870 it would mean you could add more eye candy especially in games that are coming with newer game engines.

On a side note the Q6600 is still a very good processor despite any newer ones released.

I would go for a new widescreen TFT, E8400 and a 4850 (or 4870 if you still have the budget with the screen).

thansk for all the advice everyone,

i'm deciding to go for the HIS radeon 4850 IceQ 4 Turbo but i won't be able to add a better monitor because im working on a budget and still picking out all the other parts of the pc

Similar question: I have an e6400 @ 3.1ghz, 4 gig ram, and 1680*1050 monitor. Money is a little tight as I'm about to head off to uni, so I'm thinking of settling for the 4850. Will I see a big improvement over my 8800gts 320mb at this res or should I save for the 4870?
