Ati 4850 price released.

Yeah, I am a bit of an AMD fanboy (yes i did buy an nvidia gfx card - but my next will be a 3850 when they come down in price) and so i would love to see ATI do well through their new offerings.

Well I am going on the review on xtreme forums by Jimmyz. He has pics of the cards, contents, benchmarks on a daily basis.

I have read the thread, and it's the main reason why i don't think that it's going to be 800SP. It's on par with a 8800GT in his benches. Maybe the drivers aren't getting the best out of the card, otherwise i can't understand why ATI would need to increase the number of SP by 2.5 to get a 20% increase in performance.

It has to be 800SP's or around that otherwise the 4850's would have to be clocked at around 1GHZ for the 1 teraflop mark and we already know that they aren't.

:)

its all about the architecture baby !

unless its the same chip and so forth.

and then drivers to utilize it.

another example 8800gt vs 9600gt. which do you think is better owenb

What are usual shipping costs from America? And would an American card work in an English mobo? If so, then it shouldn't be more than £130 which is good news because I'm buying one tomorrow or Thursday :D

Yes, the card would work in any motherboard, there are no "English" motherboards. But don't forget that if you buy in the US you will have to pay VAT / duty on top of the price + shipping.

1: No idea!
2: It should work as PCI-E is an international standard, it's the same everywhere. Think the same with a PSU and you'll be treated to a light show.

<pedantry>
You pay import duty on the purchase price of the product, which gives the import price. You then pay VAT on the import price. The shipping is not imported, it is solely a service, so you should pay neither VAT nor duty on shipping costs.

A lot of 'private US sellers from the bay' will mark the customs form with a description of '"engineering sample" or "gift" and give it a nominal value of $1. This used to work some of the time, but more recently customs are getting better at spotting the bull.

Import duty varies massively depending on the item. I've not looked it up, but I think this would be about 20%. TFT panels with HDMI have an insane duty of around 30%, which is why most high end panels these days are assembled inside the EU, normally in whichever poor eastern european country has recently joined. My last one was assembled in Hungary I think, with the panel coming from South Korea :)

so true...but brilliant to watch if you have old psu which is on its way out. take it outside and burn some rubber !

on a more smarter note. i also hope ati pull it off. will really compete with nvidia all or nothing performance and ati's price/performance niche.

havent seen something like this lately.

I've been reading, and i thought the 4850 was pushed back a week to be realised with the 4870, but your saying the 4870 isn't out till July?? This is very annoying if true, i really want this card so i can start my decent eye candy gaming for the summer!

Yes i know, but it just doesn't make sense to me! How can a 150% increase shader power give just a 20% in overall performance? Nvidia increased their shaders by 70% and got ~60% increase in game.
Maybe ATI have redone their SP's to be very weak as shaders but still capable ALU's. In the end it doesn't matter if it has 800 or 480 as we know the performance level of the 4850 and it's a 8800gt, not a GT200 competitor.
