quick question, what is the average temps the 4850 should run at idle and heavy load? ..i know about the fan speed 'hack' and have it set 38% as any higher is way too loud tbh. 48% enters 'jet engine' territory.

with those settings i get about 45-50C idle and 70ish under load. is that any good? do i need a 3rd party gpu cooler?
 
Those temps seem fine to me...I get a marginally better temps after flashing the graphic card bios...but my fan speeds rise as the temps rise to keep the temps under control when under load. I guess that you would not like the increase in fan noise.
I have a 3rd party cooler that I will install later this week (just to try to improve temps even more before I start oc)
 
ok thanks, seems im good for now. do you have any info on how to flash bios?..and how do you adjust the the fan to speed up automatically as the gpu gets hotter? thnaks
 
Yep...I'm using the Sapphire bios from the site mentioned above.
Fitted my Vortexx neo cooler...results are very good...card idles at 31C and the most I've got it up to under load using Flt Sim FSX is 55C...happy bear :D
