ATI 4850 too dark?

Hey guys, this isn't really a huge problem but just more of a niggle. I recently upgraded my 8800gts to the 4850. I play a fair bit of competitive CSS and have noticed that dark areas ingame are a lot darker now. I play with brightness maxed, and on the 8800 i could clearly see the brightness test text. But now its barely visible, strangely though if i slide the slider back towards dark and then back to the brightest again it shows bright for a second then kind of blooms back to dark.

I have tinkered with most settings in CCC but to no avail :(

Is there anything i can do about this as its really restricting my view of darker areas on certain maps.

i can only sujest adjusting the settings in ccc but as youve done this im out of ideas are you sure youve adjusted everything to get it as bright as possible?

I had a similar problem about a year or so back with a 2900xt. Any Source game was over dark, and no matter what I did, I couldn't get the darkest line of text on the gamma test even remotely visisble.

I was utterly convinced it was a driver problem, or something to do with the card. In fact, it was my old CRT that just wasn't performing anymore.

I managed to cope with the monitor a while longer after swapping to an 8800, as altering the brightness and gamma in the nVidia drivers worked for me. When I'd used the CCC with the 2900 to try and adjust the gamma, it steadfastly refused to make a difference in any Source powered games.

I've since purchased a new monitor (negating the need for any driver gamma fiddling), but if you're running a fairly old-ish display, it might be worth trying a mates monitor, even if you are convinced that the monitor isn't the problem (just like I was).

i dont think its the monitor (20inch wide dell) as its the same monitor i used with my old 8800. I'm pretty much in the same boat, i can't see the darkest text in the brightness settings. Also I have noticed that adjusting the 3d Application brightness in the CCC has no effect. Possible source games stop any adjustments in CCC ingame.

Anyone else any suggestions, or am i just gonna have to live with it?

I noticed Source got darker for me from a 7600GT to a 3850, but it doesnt seem as bad as you have described, so i can live with it.

It's fixable by playing at directx level 81, just put -dxlevel 81 in your launch options, then open the game, quit the game, take the -dxlevel 81 out of the launch options and you're done. (u have to take the dxlevel 81 out of your launch options, otherwise it will not save your video settings ingame)

i already run in 8.1, i'll try changing back to 9 and back to 8 again see if that helps, thanks for the suggestion.
