ATi 4870 Doubts...

Hi all,
I've pretty much got my system designed, but I'm stuck at deciding which GPU to get. I was tempted by the 4850/4870 at first, but I've read a fair amount of comments that say the 4800 series cards give good benches but don't perform as well in real life. I've heard people say that although the average FPS is very good the ATi cards have lower minimum frame rates and sometimes stutter in games.

I'm seriosuly considering going to nvidia, as stability is the most important thing to me frame-rate wise. The thing is I'm only going to be gaming on 19in screen, but still I've read concerns about ocassional performance issues on smaller resolutions :(
Could anyone with a 4850/4870 comment on the frame drops etc?

Thanks,
Al

On a 19" screen...any card will eat it up. 4870/4850 or 260...wouldnt wory to much about it. Go for what ever brand you prefer.

I've not experienced any of these issues (so far) however, there are plenty of people who have suffered from problems.
It maybe depends on what games you're playing but if it's a large concern then the recent NV 260's could be your safest option. :)

i had a 4850 and experienced, bad dips in frame rate,in fallout 3,cod4 was fine, brothers in arms wouldent even start,i tried the card for a week, then sent it back and got a 9800gtx+,in my veiw a much better card, plays every thing without a hitch on max, with no dips or stutter,

Pretty much sums up the 48XX series cards. Great for canned benchmarks but the stats do not translate to a smooth experience in game.

I had a 4870 and I experienced the stuttering in games. May be the 1GB versions sorts this problem out. I can't comment. The G200 series does give you a stutter free consistent gaming experience. I am very happy with my GTX 280.

In your position I would shoot for the 260 Max.

What the hell is all this talk of stuttering :/ Never experienced it. And my 4850 is faaar better than any G92 card I've ever used. FAR FAR better.

However, at 1400x900 I recommend upgrading your monitor first. You are missing out dude.

I've got a 4850 and game at 1680*1050, I haven't came across any of the problems mentioned, every game bar crysis runs at maximum detail with no fuss. So unless you plan on getting a larger monitor I'd stick with a 4850, or the nvidia option being a 9800gtx+ (costs more and from what I've heard isn't any better than the 4850), anything above at that resolution would be a waste.

This is a good guide to graphics cards

I've been gaming with everything on max as well 1600 x1200 on my 4850 and smooth as can be. Great card!

I think it depends on : the game , resolution and settings, board manufacturer ? - I guess some are superior to others, temperature etc. I currently have a 512mb and for some games its great! However, for the big and future stuff coming out it just isn't, for me, adequate. Not enough vram...:(
