I dont have an ati card so cant help this guy, but could do with some help in diagnosing this for him as we cant play MW2 online at the mo - his PC keeps crashing.
I was wondering if some of the more experienced ati owners have come across this before or heard of fixes knocking around for this.
I was going to suggest that he test his RAM, and I was hoping someone here knew a program for monitoring power usage to see if his PSU is touching the limit for this card? I also wanted to see how hot his case gets as maybe heat might be an issue???
Sorry for such a long post, but I wanted to give as much info as he gave me.
Im heading round there this weekend with the psu out of my system + my RAM to see if that helps at all, but will welcome any other suggestions to try and end up with a working solution
Im heading off to work now, but will check in later and see what people are suggesting..
Hello mate
Was holding off on sending you these links until I had another chance to test all of the solutions in the threads that I've found.
It's weird because i can play Bioshock 1 & 2, left4dead2, Dead Space with no problems but Modern Warfare 2, Crysis Warhead crash. I picked up Alien vs Predator on Friday and have the same problem. Wondering if these games are tasking the card more than bioshock etc?
My problem is:
The game will play for a random length of time (sometimes 10 mins sometime and hour or more) then the screen flickers turns white and I can hear the audio playing in the background (sometimes looping sometimes sounding like the games still running). Then the problem is inconsistent. The white screen sometimes stays up as long as I leave it, sometimes it switches to a black screen then blue, then sometimes I get the BSOD and pc resets (too quick to read the error). In every case apart from BSOD though I have to do a hard reset to reboot.
There are many suggested causes/fixes but the most likely seem to be:
• Powerplay drivers switching from 3d to 2d in game (later Catalyst drivers and app have powerplay running by default and it can't be switched off, hence killing the CCC app or running older versions of the driver/app with no powerplay, also fixing the speeds using rivatuner/CCC overclock is supposed to fix this)
• GPU Overheating
• Incorrect voltage to card
• Old conflicting ATI drivers left behind by the update installer
• Faulty hardware (RAM, PSU etc)
Tried following and still no luck!
• Uninstalled ATI drivers from control panel
• Run driver sweeper in safe mode to remove hidden drivers
• Did above for each re-install of ATI drivers (i.e. installed drivers on disk that came with card, no luck then remove all and installed next release of ATI drivers and so on up to latest 10.2 release)
• fixed GPU and cards ram speeds using RivaTuner, also fixed fan speeds (tried various combinations with no luck)
• Closed ATI's Catalyst software
• Disabled ATI HDMI audio driver from device manager
• I've checked the temps using both RivaTuner and Catalyst apps and all look ok (I think, not 100% what i'm looking at but no red spikes)
Checked event viewer for any clues but bothing of any use there (shows a system error where the os freezes but no useful application error flags) - funnily enough windows 7 control panel/action centre shows a problem with the ati drivers, but no matter what versions I try, same error. I don't want to start mucking about with voltage settings etc and to be honest I shouldn't have to, should work straight out of the box without me tweaking the mobo/bios etc. Also some people have suggested flashing the bios for the mobo and the ATI card but seing as this can be risky and doesn't seem to have fixed the problem from the posts i've read i'm reluctant to try it.
The worst case is that i'll have to contact ATI and send the card back to them but i'm not convinced it a hardware problem at all + this would be a major pain, no pc for weeks whilst the card is shipped, tested etc.
One other possible cause is the PSU. Some people are suggesting that 460W might not be powerful enough the run the card? Could try swapping it out for a more powerful PSU perhaps. Pulling my hair out here
Anyway my spec is:

I've picked the most relevant link that I've found, there are tons of others though:
(weirdly some of them are flagged as solved but not for me!! lol)
