Hello peoples, I'm looking to upgrade my Sapphire 4870 1GB to a card thats going to handle 1080p games on maxed out settings. I play games such as GTA4, MW3, NFS The Run etc. The rest of my PC specs are as follows:

Asus P6T
i7 920
6GB Corsair Dominator
850 BeQuiet PSU

I have been looking at cards such as the 6850, 6870, 6950, 6970 and need a little nudge in the right direction as to whats good bang for buck at the moment. I have also read that the 7XXX series ATi cards will be released soon, & it would make sense to wait for this to bring current card prices down however I have the upgrade itch & no matter how hard I try, I will never be able to keep up with the pace of latest tech.

I'm a little concerned the cards listed above are not going to be a big enough upgrade from my 4870 so was thinking of buying another 4870 for a Crossfire setup, but prices are not far off the newer cards of today & availability not the best.

You may have been wondering why I have not considered any GeForce cards well the only reason being, their cards seem to be a little more expensive than ATi. Geforce recommendations are welcomed.

What are your guys thoughts, do you think my PC is GPU limited or will I be just wasting money by upgrading?

When you get to 250 posts you'll get access to the Members Market, you'd probably get a good deal on another 4870 or 4890 there and go crossfire. That would give you similar performance to a 6950 or GTX 560.

Going to be silly here, but doesnt staying 4890 or 4870 restrict you to dx9 and the unused now dx10, as everything seems to be dx11 or lowered to dx9 now?
It would a nice cheap stopgap, as you could go xfire for 40 pounds or so.

I am in a 4890 now, and considering my future, will await the 7000 series.

You have a few options.

If you want it now: 6950 2Gb or a 560ti (448) or a 570.

If you dont mind waiting a few months: I would get a 7950 (I think from what I have seen there will be two variant, 1: 3Gb model and another 1.5Gb model.
Maybe the price/performance will be with the 1.5Gb model.

Depends what resolution you play at.
