Hi Everyone,

I have a ATi 4870x2 card in my rig at the moment. It idles at about 40oc and 75oc on full load (40% fan which never increases).

When I'm in windows or not in a game, I notice the Catlyst Control Centre clocks my Card to the following:

GPU Clock: 507MHz
MEM Clock: 500MHz

Which is fine, I understand why it would do that. In some games however, when im running them, they will somestimes stay at that setting dispite my GPU being on full load. One example is left for dead, however, if i Alt+tab to windows and Alt+tab back into my game, the GPU and MEM frequencies will go back to they're original gaming settings ie:

GPU clock : 750MHz
MEM clock : 900Mhz

Is there a reason why this is doing it?

Thanks,

David

Can't say that I've noticed this with my card at all...

If I alt-tab into windows then yes, the clocks will usually drop to 507/500 while I'm in windows. Also, if I run a game in windowed mode, the clocks will usually be 507/500.

But, if you use a program which will continually log clockspeed (I used rivatuner to check), then you will see that while you're actually in-game the clockspeeds are at the correct level (750/900 or whatever else they're clocked at).

Have you got your 4870x2 set to PCIE 1.0 mode using the KE DIP switch ?

I dont think DIP switches have been made in to mobos since the introduction of pic-e slots.

There is a DIP switch on most 4870x2 near the crossfire connector, one is to switch between PAL and NTSC for TV out and the other (KE) is for PCIE 1.0 or PCIE 2.0 compatability.

Some IX38/IX48 boards have problems with 4870x2 so if you set it to PCIE 1.0 it improves stability (but has slight decrease on speed). I had to do this until I found a BIOS upgrade that allowed me to boot the card in PCIE 2.0 mode.

I think the OP may not be seeing the GPU speed quick enough. I thought the same so I used GPU-Z to monitor my GPU speed and enabled log to file. This then continually logs your GPU speed and I played various games and then checked the log, each time I played a game the speed went up from 507/500 to 750/900 so it is working fine. Rivatuner also does the same, suggest you try that.
