1st i'd like to say lo to every1 here :)

ok i have a xfx 4870x2 that is starting to mess about with the temps. sometimes on desktop the temps are 50 degrees other times they go above 70 degrees and when i play games like mass effect 2 or stalker clear sky the temps are always high 90's, the highest has been 109 degrees.all these temp readings are with the fan speed set to 100%. any help you guys can give me will be great, my main concern is should i be worried about the temps? ty

Yes, 109c is very high particularly with the fan at 100%.

I would suggest removing the cooler and cleaning out any dust, cleaning off the thermal paste and replacing it with something decent would be a good idea while you're at it.

Taking the cooler off and voiding the warranty is a very odd issue really.

If you take it off and break the card, technically speaking, that's voided the warranty, however, if you take it off, clear out the dust and fix it back together with no issues, and it works, then your warranty is still "valid".

It's something they say just to cut down on the number of people who are idiots with screwdrivers, taking apart *company's product*, breaking it, and trying to claim on the warranty.

Most people not too knowledgeable would probably just accept it's broken and give up.

There's nothing much companies can do to tell if you've took the cooler off however, 99% of the time they'll be completely oblivious and accept it for an RMA.

If the card's faulty for unrealted reasons and you so happen to have taken the cooler off at some point, I wouldn't see any issue at all claiming repair/replacement via RMA to be honest.

So yeah, to be concise, they only say that to avoid having to deal with loads of clueless idiots breaking their cards due to taking it apart.

would they not look at/test the heatpaste on the gpu ? , not all are alike

Colour match it. Plus, depending on the problem, they wouldn't take the whole card apart.

Generally they use pastes which are either white or grey anyway and most pastes are grey or white. I really can't see them testing the paste itself to see if it's the paste they use (and for all we know, they could use something Arctic Cooling MX2 anyway which you could have used yourself).

I've had to start using Rivatuner to control the fan speed on my 4870X2, as ATI auto fan control seems quite happy to allow it to go into the 80s with no change in fan speed at all, at which point I start getting tearing. :(

Never used to be like this with older pre-10.1 drivers. :(

so i should take the cooler off, clean and apply some AS5? and is it is still getting hot then what? should i send it back and if i do would i need all the original box contents. i know i still have the box.

its probably just dust buildup over the heatsinks inside the cooler, once youve got the cooler off the card, there should be a few screws underneath the cooler to get the lid off to clean out the dust.

or get a can of compressed air and blast it out from the backplate
