ATI 4890 Fan problems

Hi guys,

I've got a XFX ATI 4890 and the fan has decided to pack in. I'm looking to try get a replacement or an aftermarket cooler that would suit, reasonably priced too. The graphics card is this one, with the fan in the middle of the card.

I've been looking but I've never had anything other than the stock coolers so would love some advice or pointers!

Not sure I need something this pricey to be fair, would prefer to get the price down as it's not my main PC.

Actually, found it for around £25 which isn't too bad. Any idea if I'm going to have to do any modifications to get this fitted or will it be a breeze?

Hi, I'm back again.

I got the cooler and it went on like a dream. Anyway a few weeks later I've noticed the PC is still crashing due to the card overheating. It seems to be after a lot longer but still a pain.

Anyway I'm sure this is due to the fan control. I've had to connect to the 12v molex connector because the plug on the card is completely different to the connectors on the Accelero.

I would prefer not to mod the cable in anyway (plus I already threw away the old cooler like a chump) so a cheap fan controller might be best but need one compatible. Any ideas on what's best to look for or is there a cable that could do this?

I'll try get a few pictures together of the cables and the graphics card in case that helps tomorrow.

Thank for the help in advance

Well if you don't want to mod the cable you need to mod the fan header.

As you see it in that picture you need to snip off either the top or bottom or both of the white box for the connector to be able to get over the pins.

Alternatively you don't mod that but you get another cable and mod that so it plugs into the fan header and connects to the GPU cooler cable.
