ATI 5770 issues

Hi.

I am having some issues with this graphics card. Its an XFX 5770 (blower type cooler). I swapped it for my Nvidia GTS240 with my cousin because he had some horrible issues with motherboard compatibility.

Well my issues are less severe. I am getting a bit of artifacting in some games like L4D2 and BC2. I am running 10.9a drivers and I have disabled over drive in CCC.

In L4D2 when an item or someone is glowing white checker appears within the middle of glowing outline.

For BC2 in the main menu I get little black dots over the buttons that kind of judder.

I have not tested any other games but I guess similar things will happen as well.

Well originally the bios was an unlocked Asus bios I tryed upping the volts a little bit with MSI afterburner to see if it removes the artifacts but nope. I just flashed it with the latest version of XFX balck edition bios which has higher clocks and volts but the issues are still there.

My cousin has sent this card to OCUK for an RMA because of the issues and they tested it and they said it runs fine with 7 different games but I am also getting some of the isues. I think its the card even though OCUK said it was fine.

Should I send it off for an RMA then? Obviously flashing the bios back to the standard XFX bios.

can you flash the bios without voiding the warranty? if not then posting that on here probably wasn't the best idea in the world.

I wouldnt be flashing a card that i believed to be faulty unless explicitly told to do so by the manufacturer

First thing to do is check the temperatures when it's running those games.
Might be worth enabling overdrive and setting the fan speed to 50% + manual and seeing if the same artifacts occur.

In general just sounds like you are running it above clocks it is happy with though I would say flash it back to the cards original bios and clock speeds and then see.

Yeah you can flash the bios becasue XFX release updates for it.

Temperatures are fine. I have run Furmark on xtreme burn mode for 10 minutes and the highest it goes to is 78 degrees and thats on auto fan mode. Strangely I get no artifacts in Furmark.

edit: Well with the XFX black edition bios and running Furmark on xtreme burn mode @ 1920x1080. It says the max temp was 85 degress but this time I ran MSI after burner in the background and the highest temperature it was reading at was 97 degreees :O Air flow is quite poor in my case 1 exhaust fan but I wouldnt expect it to run that hot :S

Update:

So I have flashed the card back to the original XFX bios, I took the side panel off and I set the fan to 100% via MSI afterburner.

I ran Furmark on extreme burn test on stability @ 1920x1080.

Furmark reported highest temperature as 68 degreees,
Whereas MSI Afterburner reported it as 79 degress max.

I think the card must be faulty it should not be getting these temperatures correct?

edit: while on the desktop I also seem to get an artifacting stutter than it crashes and it says the drivers have stopped working and have been resetted :S

I have a feeling XFX cards run hot. There silent compared to others but hotter with it. My older card, the fan is not very good nor efficient, at removing the heat, thats when it does come on. I had to use a separate program to keep the fan spinning fast enough, to stop the temps from creeping up to the seventys just from web browsing.

Ok thanks for the info about the heat issues XFX cards have. So what about the odd little bits of artifacting in games and driver crashes? Is it driver issues, faulty card or is a system restore needed?

Does anyone else that has a 5770 get white squares on characters in L4D2 when the red/blue glow appears around them?

ive had two of them in the last 3 or so months. In terms of performance/stability/artifacting, neither one has missed a beat. however, the first one, a HIS model (this one) ran extremely hot, ie 100.c+ in furmark. Having bought it second hand, i decided to put it on the bay (i did mention that it ran hot...) The second one, a sapphire one with the stock egg cooler tops out at about 85.C. however, ive never had any discrepancies between furmark and afterburner.

from a personal opinion, i dont see why XFX ones in particular should run hot. The majority of them use the standard blower or egg cooler (even their custom one looks suspiciously like the egg cooler with a slightly different shroud). And i believe the blower cooler is a tad better than the egg cooler anyways.

hope that helps

Hi, Just a quick question about the RMA process.

Does my cousin have to setup the RMA because he was the one who purchased this card. Or can I do it myself as long as I have the e-mail invoice?

Would it also be best to supply images of the artifacting?

Cheers.
