ATi 5770 or 4890

also 5770 overclock very well

I went on performance, and the 4890 wins over the 5770. Power consumption isn't to much of an issue for me tbh.

Forgot to say I won't be using 4890x2 at anypoint, so I based my purchase on the thinking that my next GFX upgrade would be another single GPU route. Otherwise I would have gone for a 4850 and added a card at a later date.

Ok, well I was torn between trying to but an old Vapor-X or getting a 5770, now I'll also add an XFX to the 4890, should be slightly easier to find one or the other.

With the 5770, as the drivers mature isn't it possible that it'll catch up on the 4890 more? Maybe not surpass, but be pretty damn close? If that's the case I think I'd rather pay slightly more for new + warranty + DX11, and if I decide to in the future, sell it off and get something better.

No, it will never be as fast. The HD 4890 has twice the memory bandwidth of the 5770.

This rubbish about a massive performance increase for the 5770 in the next driver release is a myth. It was originally alleged to happen in the 9.11 release and, surprise, didn't and is now "supposed" to happen in the 9.12 release.

Also, the benchmarks for the 5770 in the only DX11 game available show it is a poor performer in DX11 mode as it doesn't have the grunt.

Buy the 5770 if you wish, but throwing your money at something that doesn't perform in the hope that it will when the next driver is released seems a bit silly.

Yeah i'd say if you want a card that will play DX11 games, wait a while until the HD 5850 drops in price (and are actually in stock). Don't just go for the 5770 cus it's cheaper.

Am I really lucky? What cooler have you got on your card?

This is the card/cooler i have, got both from overclockersuk, and the picture is different on their site but this is the one you get when you order an XFX. Maybe it's the cooler on these cards?

Also, what case/case cooling are you using?

Got the same card, case could be letting me down: Coolermaster 334.

Hence why I asked.

Well I'll see what I can find around, in a few days I'll have MM access so I'll look on there too, don't fancy paying full price if I can avoid it.

Agree to an extent but a big improvement in drivers is always possible. Agree its not a good reason to buy a card. How that card plays games now is what matters and if it is comparable with your setup to give you the performance you require in the games you play.:)
