I picked up a 5830 for my sons computer on the daily deal for 70 pound and i am having trouble getting games to run at 1080p .

i can select 1080p as my desktop res but in game it wont let me go higher than 720p . i cant get my head around ccc .

some help would be gratefull

What is the screen?
I used to use a 720P TV screen, that would let me select 1080p at desktop ( although it would only run at 1080 interlaced-not progressive), and consequently was only capable of 720p or 1360x768 in game.
What screen are you using?

It is a 1080p hd samsung tv . The desktop displays fine at 1080p in game it wont let me go higher than 720p .had no problems with the nvidia card .

ati drivers are crap . i mean this should be a simple install

Hi there,

Have you fully removed all previous display drivers (using a tool like driver sweeper) and installed the most recent Catalyst drivers (11.5 I believe)?

Also, may I ask what the rest of the specification's of your son's system are and what is the model number of the Samsung TV?

The games im playing are , aliens v preadtor - left 4 dead 2 - batman ,all worked perfect with the nvidia card at 1080p no problems .

Have run drivers sweeper to remove any old drivers , installed the latest drivers from amd's website .

The system is well capable of running these games ,they did with the 9800gtx at 1080p

i had a bad feeling about buying an ati card again . its a been nothing but a pain messing with this card for hours now

iI thought that vga couldnt carry a 1080p signal

It really can - it actually can support resolutions much higher that 1080p. My mum is happily using her laptop with a 24in 1920x1200 monitor linked by a VGA connection - it looks great.

To connect your 5830 to a VGA cable you will need a DVI-I to VGA adapter, though i'm not sure if you get one with your graphics card.

Just to clarify - your monitor will run games at 1080p but your TV will only let you select 720p?

Does the desktop display on the TV at 1920x1080?

What happens if you connect the monitor and TV at the same time and set the resolution to 1920x1080?

Yes my tv is a full 1080p hd led tv . I can display my desktop at 1920 x 1080 but when i launch any game i cannot select 1920 x 1080 as the gaming rez . The highest it will go is 1366x768 .
