I have windows 7 64 bit, and an ATI 5850 Therefore I shouldn't have any problem running directx 10/11 applications.
I bought Civ V at the weekend and was disappointed to find I could only run it in directx 9 mode.
If I select the directx 10/11 option the screen goes black and then............ nothing at all happens, I have to ctrl+alt+del to get out.
I initially thought that this was a problem with Civ V, and tried some of the Civ related fixes on the steam forums. * None of these have worked however.
On a hunch I tried loading Metro 2033 and found I was having the same problems. It started up fine, I checked the video preferences and it was running in directx 9 mode.
I changed it to directx10 (directx 11 was greyed out).
I exited the game and reloaded it - now the same thing happens as for CIV V, I launched from steam, and it went to a black screen and got stuck there.
Therefore it would seem that I am having a general problem running applications using directx10/11.
For example I have tried downloading the Directx end-user runtime from Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/resultsForProduct.aspx?displaylang=en&productID=9C954C37-1ED1-4846-8A7D-85FC422D1388
When I run it a message pops up stating:
"Directx setup has determined that a newer or equivalent version of DirectX is already installed. No installation is necessary."
Anyone got any idea what is going on here and how i could fix it?
I suspect this may have been cause by updating my ati drivers (via steam) a few days ago.
* (I have turned compatibility mode off on the steam launcher, I have ran the dxsetup.exe, and i have changed the ini to skip the intro)
