ATI 5970 Engineering Sample

This must be the "lower end" one, I assume a higher end model will come out with 2GB

I agree with Cyber-Mav that this is probably showing specs per core. And by the looks of the device ID this engineering sample is the highest end card if we use the details of the opencl beta driver information:

The GPU-Z information for the 5800 cards has the highest last character of the ID as the lower model of the two. E.g. the 5870 = 6898, the 5850 = 6899. One should suspect that if they're using the same logic the 689D = 5950 and the 689C as shown in the OP should be the 5970.

Seriously, how long is that card? There's not much point in winning back the 'performance crown' if no one can fit your card in their case!

You should allow a minimum of 13 inches including clearance I think.

awesome =] that looks good news! hope they release a high clocked one!! they defo shud :S if the 5870 is good for going past 1000 on the core then the 5970 should be at least 850mhz for the top end part! i remember the rumours saying the dual GPU high end model would be clocked 50MHz higher than the 5870 xD

You can always overclock the 5970, but I have been lead to believe that the reason it is underclocked per core (compared to the 5870 counterpart) was because of heat issues. Of course if you got some nifty watercooling that would be a different matter. Pic very much related

That thing looks bloody long. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this the 5870X2 card? Or a whole new card about the 5870?
