ATI 6000 series, aggregate of rumours

"A screenshot hit the internet at the chinese forums PCInLife, where a screenshot of a 3DMark Vantage Extreme run shows a score of X11963. For comparison's sake a single 5870 generally scores just over 9000 points, suggesting the card may be up to 33% faster than the current generation."

This is either just rubbish or this is Cayman, no way can this be Barts XT (6870)

I'm actually glad I didn't decide to sell over my 5850. All the rumours lead to the conclusion that whilst a 6870 will be faster than my 5850, I would expect it to be in 10-15% margin that can be easily narrowed to 5-10% when overclocking (5850 has a massive headroom for it).

I currently run my Radeon at stock and TBH there's not much more performance I need at all. Let's have a look at what I play atm, Age of Empires 3, Bad Company 2, Dirt 2, FIFA Online/11, Left4Dead2, M&B Warband, Napoleon Total War, Civilization 4 and 5, SW: Empire at War, Test Drive Unlimited 2, The Witcher, Tropico 3 and World of Tanks. NONE of which require more power, also, I haven't encountered many games that would and none of them had lasted more than a few evenings anyway.

I'm pretty sure 6850 and 6870 will be great cards at their price range but upgrading for me would require a lot more money than I really want to spend on my PC and wouldn't give me any noticeable benefits. I may as well wait for a bargain second-hand 5850s that will probably be selling at £120 in a few months. Still, looking forward to first benchmarks and reviews, this is going to be an exciting year.

The thing I'm trying to figure out is pricing/ perf compared to the existing 5xxx series. The "barts" parts (6870,6850) are meant to be replacements for 57xx series but comparable in performance to the 58xx series but does that mean the prices will be 57xx or 58xx series ballpark ?
Also, will you be able to xfire 68xx with 58xx ?

There will be new price tags for the entire range of graphics.

Reasonable prices would be as follows (that can be confirmed by a few rumours but is nothing but speculation by me):

  • 6750/70 - <$100-130 (re-branded 5700 series with possibly adjusted clocks)
  • 6850 - $200 - £150 w/VAT (Barts Pro)
  • 6870 - $250 - £190 w/VAT (Barts XT)
  • 6950 - $350 - £260 w/VAT
  • 6970 - $400 - £300 w/VAT
  • 6990 - $600 - £450 w/VAT (if not a dual-core Barts XT, then $500 is more likely)

I'm wondering if there is anything in between of 6850 and 6770, there seems to be a performance gap and a price hole. It may be that AMD doesn't want to compete with themselves though.
