ATI 6870 Crossfire performance

I had a little play turning crossfire on and off last night.

Using fraps and BC2 @ 2560 v 1440 everything on max and vsync off

Crossfire off - fps was jumping about in the 30s

Crossfire on - fps was jumping about in the 60s

Maybe our quads are the bottleneck at low res?

Well, I was starting to worry that my 6870/6850 frankenfire wasn't working properly as dirt2 is a good dx11 benchmark.

But, that's 3 of us on here with core 2 quads and crossfire 6870 (well, I almost have) and getting roughly the same results, and no where near the ~120fps in some of the published reviews for 6870/6850 in crossfire.

So, I think it must be either cpu, or drivers?

Oh, and the 6870 doesn't downclock to 6850 speeds, both run independently at whatever clocks you tell them. Been checking obsessively on my second screen with afterburner/ GPU monitor gadget.
And, 2x6850 is enough to destroy the Dirt 2 benchmark if the reviews are to be believed: http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-6850-6870-crossfirex-review/9

Update - must be something to do with Dirt 2. Just tested Metro 2033 and the scaling is off the scale ;) with my frankenfire setup.

Literally double what I get with crossfire turned off and just using the 6870.

Weirdly the game itself performs great scalimng like this, but the benchmark doesn't. What's going on there then
