ATI 6870

Yes about the best you can get for that money ,you could get a GTX 470 and overclock it to 800mhz on the core which would then put the GTX 470 around the same speeds as a GTX 480 i think, but for £200 i would say its the best for that amount of money.

I picked up a Sapphire 6870 a few days ago and the performance is slightly better than a 5850, plays everything I've thrown at it so far with no probs. Saying that, I'd also look at the 470 range of cards, really good deals are now available on them.
They'll be a lot of ppl here recommending the 470 over the 6870;)

Thanks for the reply. I've read various things about the GTX470 and the performance looks pretty good, but there's so many complaints about the noise and overheating which put me off a bit. Thats why I thought this 6870 would be a good buy :)

If noise is a major issue for you then yes the reference 470s can get very loud under load, ive owned both a 470 and 480 and they are both very loud and hot.

A 6870 will be completely the opposite

This is better in performance and cheaper but will run hotter than the 6870, will consume more power and maybe a bit noisier depending on how good your case is.

My case doesnt seem to have much noise reduction and it can get warm, so I think the 6870 sounds like the best choice for me :)

Thanks for your help!

I picked up a 6870 shortly after they where released for a new system build, i have no reference to recent previous generations but its a great card for the price, very refined generation and efficient. Saying that the 470 performs a little better and its great value for money with respect to its performance now so definitely worth serious consideration.

*Edit* - I went for a Sapphire 6870 because the components that came with it appealed to me more than a free game. Check out youtube videos of people unboxing their cards to see what exactly comes with them.

If the 6870 had stayed at rrp of £175 I would have bought one but as usual price gouging pushed it up to current price. Made me look at the 470 which I decided was better value, I have good cooling etc in my case but I might buy an aftermarket cooler if I think it necessary. Both excellent cards cant go wrong really.:)

Your thread has very helpfully answered the question of whether to go for the 470 or 6870. Got my heart set on this now:

It's much pricier than the 6870 but this runs much quieter, cooler and with less power use than normal 470's - with better performance.
This isn't from personal experience mind, it's from a mixture of forum gossip, Toms Hardware and other review sites.
