Hi

I am looking to buy a gfx card and have been looking at the gigabyte 6990 but wanted to know how loud are the 6990 at idle in general? I don't really mind the sound when playing game or startup, but more interested in the sound at idle or if planing a youtube video .

thanks in advance

thanks for all the replies everyone,

If i was to watch a DVD would this cause the gfx fan profile to switch to 2D load profile, ie loud?

Basically I dont want noise when watching DVD or programming but anything else I could not care mutch

thanks everyone

Finlay got a Gigabyte 6990 and its very big card :~)

well everything was going fine, Did not have any idea that it would put out so much heat. Only had two fans installed in my computer, one pulling air into the case and another just on the heatsink for the CPU. About hour after playing game, i could feel a lot of heat hitting my face from under the desk. Shut down and opened the case and it was like an oven.

Turned on the other fans and things are a little better now, but I am idling at 60c and gaming at 70-75c. When i run future mark it get up to 90c and the fans sound like a hurricane. The design is very silly, its blowing air into the case.

are these temps normal? also the back of the graphics card gets very hot, too hot to touch, is this normal?

thanks all

ok, what is the norm temperature rage for idle and gaming?

I cant have all these fans on all the time, i will go insane from the sound.

what is the best program to measure temperature while idle/gaming?

I use CPUID and the catalyst control center. I am currently idling at 56c, will have a go at gaming and then view the temperature immediately to see what the gaming temp is like, but I am assuming that BF2(its only game i have) is not a game that is very GPU intensive.

is the back of your gfx card very hot to touch?

thanks for the help:)

just out of interest how ventilated is your case?

like how many fans do you have in your case? do you have a fan blowing directly onto the grx cards.

Because the card is so long, it is almost touching one of my fans( hard to explain) so I had to disable that one, because the card would be blowing air out into the case and the fan pushing ait into the gfx card.

starting to worry that there might be something wrong with my card, because its idling 8-10c higher than yours.

thanks

Hi all

on mine i've got 2 200mm fans at the top, 1 140mm fan at the rear, the side door 200mm fan which blows straight on the cards, and the front 230mm fan.

i don't think it's fault.

u have a small case??

I have a Lian Li full tower case, sorry forgot what model exactly(few years old now). But currently have 1 front fan, rean fan and also one on the heat sink ,all 120mm fans(they are only 1000rmp models)

My max temperature after gaming with BFBC2 is 91c, which is also the same temperature when i run future mark.

are these temperatures acceptable? 54 idle-91 max? is there a fault with this card?

I don't have much experience with these cards and the heat is a scaring me.

one of the reason for your low temps could be because you have a fan directly aimed at the GFX cards. The back plate of mine gets very hot during gaming

AMDPower are you using dual monitors?, as that causes the card to idle at higher clocks, therefore higher temps
no dual monitors only 1 x 30" dell

last night i checked the back plate, it's hot~ but not very hot, (can easyly keep hand on it without burn yourself)

54 idle-91 max is still fine has it's 10-15c~ under the safe temp....

on auto fan i get 78-80c under gaming load.. but personly i try to keep my cards at about 70c~ so i setup a fan profile

Thank for taking the time to check the backplate for me, I recently got temperature of 94C when playing bfbc2 (think because my room was hot), think i will have to install few more fans into my case. Thin in turn will fill the case up with fine dust that I hate. I might have to move onto water cooling.

what exactly does that switch on the side of the gfx card do to the cooling profile, as I have not even removed the sticker yet? I know it changes the stock clocks but would this help with the cooling much?

thanks
