Basically which one is the better card, my mates mums computer has a ti4200 and his has the 9550 but i cant remember which is better as the ti4200 is an older card then the 9550, but as i can remember the ti4200 was a very good card in its time.

Thanks

9550 is Direct X 9 compliant

Geforce Ti 4200 is only Direct X 8 compliant

would go for the ti 4200 though as its going to be faster.

software wise, it can but it cannot make use of dx9 detail features, it defaults to dx8.1 resulting in it being faster than the 9550 as that defaults to dx9

No.

ti4200 is too old for them games. Get a cheap 9600pro or somit for 30 quid used. Be miles better.

Ti 4200 - dx 8 - no dx 9 effects will show in games hence faster as its not rendering them effects.

9550 - dx 9 - dx 9 effects will show but due to the slowness of the card the games with dx 9 will be slower due to it rendering said effects. So will show them as in look nicer perhaps but performance will be poor.

it will deliver better fps, visually the difference between 8.1 and 9 in css is hardly noticeable.

I have a friend with a ti4200 and i was amazed the fps he was getting on de_nuke on cs:s with it, it didn't look half bad either.

erm. read the thread guys?

from how i read it, he isnt asking what card to buy.

also, your sig is breaking the rules, change it before you get warned by a mod/admin

Go with the 9550, This card is locked but if you use ATI tool and unlock it the core will clock massive amounts. In some cases you can even flash the bios to make it into a 9600 as it is the same core.

I also had the same issue about 16 months ago and after hours of reading and reviews I gave my TI4200 to my dad and kept the 9550 (it clocked awsum).

Not sure on the memory as it did not give much movment on the clocking.

Mine was just a standard card with no fan just a cheap heatsink and still clocked like mad.

Hope that helped.

Trust me, direct x 9 on CSS looks MUCH better and is VERY noticable. I upgraded to a dx9 card from dx8 a year or so back and I was very pleased!

wow, good for you, my point is, although it is dx9 it is far too slow to have all the nice effects on, with the ti you have bump settings up and still have very good fps.

Guys, one thing you need to bear in mind here is that the reason a gf4ti is faster than the 9550 isn't simply down to it not running dx9 features. It's just faster full stop, even if you run a dx8 game it will still be faster on the gf4.

In terms of raw power the ti4200 is more equivalent to the 9600, the 9550 is a bit slower.

The only reason I would choose a 9550 over a ti4200 would be if you want to play games which require PS1.4 or higher (e.g. BF2), which are unsupported by the gf4. However both of these cards are too slow to provide good performance in such games anyway, so....
