Hi,

My Dad's ATI 9550 fan is making a loud horrible noise, you can't hear anything else over it :(

I've re-seated the fan, but no luck :(

The card doesn't seem like the type to be getting hot, so I wondered if I could just unplug the fan?

Thanks,
Craig.

I replaced the fan on my Powercolor 9600pro with a Vantec chipset cooler when the original fan started rattling. It works a treat (nothing has blown up yet). Not sure i'd risk it passive though.

The heatsink on 9550's is very small and wont work without the fan running. Your best bet is to either get an aftermarket cooler or buy a new graphics card (might be cheaper than replacing the fan/heatsink if you buy 2nd hand).

some 9550 were passive .. and the heat sink were not to big ... you probably need a better heat sink for passive

I guess I'll have to try and find a new fan then.

I've posted a ticket on the AMD website, hopefully they'll be generous enough to direct me to where I can get a new fan :)

I just found a Vantec cooler for the card for only £6.

When replacing the cooler I'm guessing it's best to clean the core and apply Arctic Silver 5 like on a CPU?

Aye, even with a basic cooler, this can often reduce the GPU core temps slightly, as the thermal gunk they usually provide isnt of amazing quality, just suitable.
