Hi all i think my 9800 256mb is dieing

I turned on pc and after the bios checks ect flash up it goes to boot from hdd (sata) and sod all happens so i tryed to install xp on a ide so i could save work and have clean install but i keep getting this error msg

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

So i google this (after spending hours looking for windows 98se cd and installing that) to fins out its prob due to dieing gfx card

But would it also stop XP from booting up??? any ideas welcome

You can get IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL when the drivers are playing up, but if they're not installed that won't make a difference.

Try updating your BIOS, ensuring your PSU is good enough (PSUs lose power over their lifetime, so if its old and relatively low powered then it could be that), and swapping out your memory for different sticks if you have any, just to check.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL has many, many different causes unfortunately :(

Or the card could just be dying...

also where would and how would i update bios?

Go to your motherboard manufacturer's web site, find your motherboard and there should be a link to drivers / BIOS updates. In the BIOS updates section (or even with the BIOS download) should be a guide on how to update the BIOS for your specific board.

However, if you've been using the same board all along it's highly unlikely it'll fix anything.

Looks like time for a new AGP card or a major overhaul :(

yea used this board for a bit
always had some probs with this card in this board

i just put it down to ram (as i installed more ram at same time)

it used to reboot its self some times of just freeze up

ill do my best without pulling everything out

cpu 2.4ghz
ram 1 gig
psu 550 or 600 watt

that help or u need more info??

Ive installed xp with that gfx card many many times bofore its just now its playing up

Assuming the psu is working fine it won't be that more than enough power
there. Try reseating the card aswell as the memory. Also if you haven't
done it for awhile try cleaning the card out to see if its maybe overheating.

Also try installing ati tool and run the 3d artifacting test should be able to
stress the card enough through that and keep a good eye on gpu temps
and also be able to see if its working ok.
