now Amd own Ati will they drop crossfire for sli would it be poss

Probley have to ask nvidia

amd/ati would make more profit so why cant they other than copyright i suppose

Err, Crossfire and SLI are practically the same thing but with different chipsets. Pretty soon (R600/RD600) Crossfire will require no dongle and no master card, so other than chipset it will be practically indistinguishable from SLI.

Nvidia would never license the rights to use SLI technology to AMD/ATI. You don't let your biggest rival know your biggest secret.

I'm hoping for the day when ATI and nVidia sort out a universal SLI/Crossfire that works with any 2 cards. Even if it has to be 2 nVidia or 2 ATI as long as the same mobo can do both I'll be happy.

Yup cards are joined by 2x bridges, instead of 1x.

See here

Same as SLi, but with another bridge added. :D

or what about chipset maker will they make a chipset thats universal so us consumer could use either 2 ati;s in cross fire or 2 nvidia's in sli on same mobo?

could that ever happen? :)

I certainly hope so, but I doubt it.

problem is these technologies are licenced so unless asus or dfi or whoever really feels like irritating an important partner I imagine things will carry on as is.

The only possiblity of this sort of thing happening is by hacking drivers, for example there are hacked nv drivers floating about that allow sli to run (badly I understand) on an INTEL chipset such as the 975X.

That supports crossfire out of the box but it can be forced to work with sli but hacking an nforce platform to take crossfire or an ati platform to do sli is highly unlikely.

I'm sure Nvidia and ATi (AMD) are both working on a way to get their dual-card setups working on any mobo (independent of chipset).
It's not in the best interests of Nv/ATi to have half the available dual-card mobos not supporting their solution.

dont have much time on market these days

939 been around what? 2 & 1/2 years not that long

why do they bring such a variety of socket out? is it just so we have to dig in to our pockets?

im sure the cpu manufacturer could change the pin and size structure of cpu's

and im sure ddr could have gotten even better as there was ddr600 out but very limited suppily

Its also not in their interests to stop selling their mobo chipsets and I would guess this is more of a factor.

Remember only a miniscule amount of pc's use two or more graphics cards anyway (in conjuction with each other - as apposed to just being used for multi-monitor setups) so it really wouldnt be an issue
