Ati and amd ?

Ive been wondering and this will sound silly but do ati and amd products work better together than say amd and nvidia, ati and intel or is that not the case.

There is supposedly some form of optimisation done by Intel/Nvidia and AMD/ATI but I'm not at all sure that it is a) normally on and b) makes anything more than a negligible difference. I think it is a massively stupid idea if indeed such optimisations do exist but using Nvidia and Intel say (as the providers of the best products currently) will not hold you back in any way.
