ATI and GeForce

Forget all the Nvidia vs ATI stuff. Decide on a budget then buy the best card at that price. Doesn't matter if it's red or green.

This, the anandtech graph at http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU11/230 shows that temps-wise most of the single GPU high end options put out between 80 and 90 degrees at load. If your case has bad airflow or if a single degree here or there will make a difference to you then I'd suggest AMD as they are cooler to a small degree (probably not noticeably). Otherwise, just buy the best bit of kit you can for your money.

Since the 4xxx series ATI cards have never really had heat dissipation problems due to the small size of the cores powering them. Nvidia had problems with the high end GTX4xx series cards, but have sorted that in the 5 series using the aforementioned Vapour chamber coolers.

There is a GTX560ti Twin Frozr on special offer today which will clock to the heavens for 170 quid. There is also a 6950 Twin Frozr that can be had for 198 quid. Both are fast cards, both are cool running, both are under £200.

Folks,

Don't forget, when we are talking about the temp of the GPU, we exclude that of the CPU as well as the North and South Bridge's. So if the GPU goes as high up as 70oC then adding that coming from the rest of the system, the temp inside the case could every likely be 100oC.

By the way, I understand that all the latest graphics cards are longer than previous generations, so what should be my considerations on the case...I can't gather much information myself on the best case...

I am going to build a new system, budget is around 1,200 pounds...

The only way the inside of your case will reach 100C is if your house is on fire :D
A hot GPU might put a couple of extra degrees on your CPU, but nothing more.

Nvidia cards are in general shorter than the ATI ones. A 560 Ti or a 570 will fit just about any ATX case.

For a full system spec post in general hardware and they'll sort you out pretty quickly.

^^ I have overclocked Q9550 and GTX470 SLI and the case temperature reading is ~28C most of the time (probe is just behind the top GPU about central on the motherboard.

Had a 5870 but changed to a 470 far better card, especially when overclocked > 850/1700/2000MHz with a fan profile fan set to peak at 65% GPU temp about 82'c depending on your case air flow.

My I7 at 4.2Ghz is usually about 40C, never goes over 60, and that's with my overclocked 5870 at 1ghz, which never goes over 85C. The temperature of the inside of the case is never as hot as the cores themselves due to the airflow through it. Don't worry about heat so much mate, if it's going to get that hot then you need a new case.

Your i7 is 920, 930, 940?

As above > What is your ambient temp in your room? It must be quite cool if your CPU never goes over 60'c.

I've got watercooling, so I'm cheating a bit really, 360 rad and an XSPC block. Am thinking about adding a GPU to the loop, but I want to upgrade my 5870 before I do.
