I'm looking for a ati card for my htpc for do some gaming ie far cry 3, alan wake and so on. My htpc can take a full size card, i have been using my on board AMD Radeon™ HD 6000 card and struggles. I want to spend £100-150 and have been looking at the Asus HD 7850 DirectCU II V2 2048MB, i haven't brought a vga card for ages so i'm unsure whats best.

The card i've been looking at below

I would try to go up a step if you can affort it the 7950 starts at about "210 and is a far better option for FC3, it might be a free game with the 7850 but it will not run it well if at all at high settings :)

P.S. its free + other games on this card as well woth a good hard look imho :)

FC3 runs well enough on a 7850 when overclocked, my lows are usually around 40 with the newer drivers.

7950 is obviously a better choice but it's quite a bit over his budget.

I've gone with my choice as i couldn't really afford the 7950 but i'd like to know what involves overclocking these cards. I've never over clocked a gpu before, how easy is this and where do i start. The card came with asus gpu tweak.

Very easy, just start the CCC program, go to the Performance Tab, select Overdrive, check the Enable Graphics OverDrive then just move the sliders up.

If you still want more you could use the Asus program or MSI AfterBurner but they are probably more trouble than they are worth for a someone new.

CCC stands for catalyst control centre. This comes bundled Snd automatically installed with the cards drivers. To find it, right click on your desktop and you will find the option. Wait for it to load. Once up, look to the left menu options and follow the one that says 'performance' (this may be called something else now but it should be obvious which option you need). Then when the screen loads, click the padlock symbol, drag the sliders right to their maximum, click apply and you are done. You can leave the fan settings at auto.
