I've heard that ATI have started taking linux support a bit more seriously recently, but the benefit applies more to newer cards. I've been trying Ubuntu with a radeon HD3850 and it's extremely shaky. Would a HD4850 work better, or am I better off just getting a nVidia card?

The drivers for the 4850 are the same. The thing is Nvidia have better 3D support but their 2D support is pants.

RadeonHD comes later this year I think which should be much more stable

I had to build a second NV based machine when I got my radeon a few years ago.

Dunno what makes anyone say NV's 3d is good but their 2d is bad.
X last crashed for me in 2005 I believe.
X crashed every day under ATI......things like switching from X to a virtual console (the control alt F(n) ons), were taking your life in your hands.

Also, since I only watch TV/Movies etc in Linux (life is too short to cope with WMP), the fact that ATI's TV output looked like drunken NTSC was a major no-no. I hear they are still terrible, although one would assume this is less of a problem in this day and age, where an S-video connection would onlt rarely be used.
No idea if they're getting any better though. Can say the Ubuntu live CD seemed stable enough on a 4850 for whatever that's worth.

Still, you've made me feel much better about buying an nv, I hate given money to anyone who's already accepted Bill's coin to stamp Linux out.

Yeah well using my 3850 with ubuntu, I keep getting crashes. I'm not 100% certain it's the graphics card doing that though. My hard drives are starting to do worrying things (although I never get a crash in windows).

Well if it's hard locking, you can be fairly certain it's the graphics card, there's not much else that can hard freeze a penguin ;)
