why is it always so bloody hard to update these.. every time i try it completely ruins my system.

the only drivers that seem to work are the original ones that came with the graphics card.

i always end up not bothering for ages, then thinking it would be a good idea to update and it messes up again.

ANNOYING.

Probably a case of PEBKAC. What exactly are you doing when you update your drivers (the steps you take)?

My personal experience has been different. I've been using ATI/AMD cards since the old AGP based 9800pro. I've had a good mix of cards from both companies during that time and with regards to ATI drivers, especially during recent years, I've always install right over the top of previous ones. No uninstalls, no driver sweeper, just straight on top and it's always been fine for me.

I can see how not everyone will have the same experience, of course.

uninstalled old catalyst and drivers from programs..also used the separate ati uninstall program to remove them. installed the new catalyst and all seemed fine but the catalyst program wouldnt load. so uninstalled again, and used this guru 3d driver sweeper as per the sticky thread.. now when install the new catalyst it says it cant find the driver inf file and wont install.. must have done something wrong along the way!

Yep DS deleted the Microsoft NV/ATI gfx Inf's.

Try system restore & install over the top without un-installing.

There's your problem, you just install the drivers over the top of the old ones, and using driver sweeper will just make things worse for you.

How does that make any sense? With the amount of junk that gets left behind by the older driver when installing over the top of another a clean uninstall/reinstall is always preferable and means if there's a problem it's with the version of the driver you're installing, and not a conflict with an older set.

I'm still using 10.10e's on a 5970 tbh as all newer versions have suffered from problems with 2d clocks making my second monitor flicker, or the second GPU running at 100% constantly.

It makes sense because installing over the top the installer automatically uninstalls what needs to be & there is no conflict with old driver because they are not there any more.

All your seeing is preference REG & config files which get left behind so that new drivers & CCC can use them so that they don't need to be manually be set-up again by the user.

The C:/AMD & ATI/Support draws are decompressed files ready for installing which can manually be deleted & are the only files that can be considered junk.

Drivers after 10.10e do have that problem but performance increase for me anyway is worth the hassle, but still they need to get the problem replicated at there end so they can fix it.

I've had a weird problem with the last few drivers they've released.

I install it as normal (over the top with steam).... everything seems okay, but when the install finishes running, it gives an error saying the driver install has failed.

Open up GPUz, and everything seems okay; even though the installation claims to have failed, GPUz sees the new driver. CCC is there.... games work fine... just it's giving me an error message when its seemingly installed correctly.

Anybody else had this? Or know why I'm getting it? I tried the whole ccleaner/driversweeper method as well.... same results. I've noticed a few bugs and glitches with the last couple of sets, so I might just roll back to 10.9.

If you have already used ccleaner/driversweeper in the past then the damage is already there that can stop new drivers installing properly..
Every system is different & some will have no problems with ccleaner/driversweeper & some will.

I hadn't used either beforehand, only after I started getting problems.... so I don't think they're responsible.

It's weird, because they seem to be working fine despite the error message. I wanted to roll back because I've been experiencing known bugs that aren't related to a botched installation (gpu 2 going to 100% when it shouldn't..... 2d clocks downclocking too far).
