My brother in law has a basic configuration Celeron 2.2 in an MSI board with an saphire ati 9550 256mb agp card.
He said the graphics were going all crazy and asked me round to have a look.
Right enough when you booted windows it was ok untill ATi Catalyst loaded in the startup sequence, then all the colours just went scrambled so you couldn't make anything out on screen at all.
I rebooted in safe mode and everything seemed to be ok. Graphics card temp at 42 degrees, so that's ok. It's not overclocked at all. All other temps under 40 degrees.
I tried a system restore to a week ago, but no change. So Back in safe mode i removed all the ati catalyst drivers and related ati software and rebooted letting windows use the default vga drivers. Everything was working fine. Went onto ati's web site to get the latest "drivers only" download, so no catalyst control centre this time. Installed, rebooted, everything still working fine. The problem seems to be when i try and change the screen resolution from 800x600x32 to 1024x768 the system just locks up. The graphics don't go funny, it just freezes.
I don't really want to have to reinstall the whole machine, so apart from testing the graphics card in another machine is there anything else i can do to track down the fault or does it sound to you guys like it's the graphics card that's screwed?
It was new at xmas (just a cheapo upgrade from the onboard intel gfx) and never been overclocked or anything.
He's been playing battlefield 2 a lot recently, just wondering if that might have pushed it to it's limmits and now somethings gone wrong.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
