I'm going to get an PowerColor ATI Radeon X1950 XT Extreme for a few months until I upgrade to Crossfire and my question is thus

If I get a motherboard that is able to implement Crossfire for example MSI K9A Platinum Crossfire and I use the PowerColor ATI Radeon X1950 XT Extreme that does not have Crossfire capability will it still work ? obviously it won't work with crossfire but will it still work as a single until I get my 2 new cards ?

I think all you will need to do is buy an additional crossfire edition card and link them up. The single card will work fine on its own.

watch the 'how it works demo'

Im positive that you can but that single card now and then just get a crossfire edition of the same card and it will work in crossfire.

However i am not sure it will work with the extreme addition, may have to get the x1950pro if you intend on getting crossfire.

I'm getting 2 ATI HD cards in a few months, this is just for now so the card will never be used in a Crossfire config

As above, also you don't have to get a crossfire edition now as ATi done away with the master cards months ago, although you can still do it that way if you can get a master, or have one, but if you can't find a master card, then any other x1950 XT will do, but there is a slight drawback as you do get a bit of a performance hit when you don't do it the master card way. :)

I think they implemented Crossfire into the CAT 6.12's first, or the 11's.
