ATI cuts 6950 allocation

we will have to wait and see. Personally I find it doubtful that it will be 30-40% quicker than a 580GTX but at the end of the day there is very little for him to gain, as in may be the fact that a lot of people mention him in the forums, but his nickname will be forever tainted if he is well off the mark. At the end of the day, we will have to wait and see, not long now.

lols ravens made a name for himself on various forums with his predictions
and the yanks are lol'ing

Is that under the account he denies to posses? :D

Well launch day prices depending on availability are ALWAYS - £20-£30 more.

Welcome to the UK.

I don't think Raven cares much about reputation :D

Faster than 580? Likely - they've had an extra month to work on it, finalize the specs, raise the bar etc.

30-40% Faster than 580? Doubt it. Seems too much of a jump but all will be revealed next week.

Look the 6870 is NOT going to be 30 to 40% faster than a 580, period.

YOUR RIGHT! The 6870 is already released and we KNOW it's slower.
The 6970 might be faster though :D
Now if you meant the 6970 ;) then please tell how you can be so sure it will not be 30-40% faster or is this another factless opinion in response to factless opinion?

ATI's "greatest ever" card, the 9700Pro was released at $399. This was $100 above pricing of Geforce TI4600 which the 9700Pro beat by a good 20-25%.

The only guarentee for a bargain card will be if the 6970 is slower or indistiguishable from the GTX580.

K..
A guy From another forum Says This
Hey guys, i can let you know distributors are taking first shipment's this week and resellers have the option to start purchasing now for the release, This is for Australia i am unsure of other countries but imagine will be same time.
A little bit of inside info given to me is yes they are faster than 580 but by how much i have no idea and they wouldn't break NDA to divulge anything else.

4-complex means that its 1536/4 = 384, which is a bit more than the 1600/5 = 320, but 1920/4 = 480 which is definitely much much more.
From another forum, pretty much the most sensible way of looking at it.
I would be surprised if the 6970 has 1920 shaders, but happy if it does.

I will keep my 580 because I think it is a very solid card (compared to my previous 480 and 5870)

..but it might get relegated to my second PC IF the 6970 is noticieably faster and IF it proves better value.

...but then again I may just buy a cheap 580 for SLI IF NVidia are forced to drop below prices below ~£320.

win-win:).

Can someone clarify this please (ONLY if this is 100% known yet!).. does the 69xx series have 4 shader clusters or 5 (4+1) shader cluster setup?

Seems very odd for one set of cards to go 4 cluster then go 4+1 for the higher range stuff?

In a way, it seems a little pointless to be speculating at this stage, since we should have hard benchmarks in a weeks time. Also, since the cards are appearing "in the wild" in Taiwan / China, we can expect preliminary leaked user-benchmarks to start trickling in soon. That being said, there are a few things that don't add up with the "30-40% faster than a GTX580 claim":

* Firstly, a 30-40% improvement over the GTX580 would place it solidly faster than a 5970. This is in contradiction to AMDs own product placement slides, which place the 6970 below the (dual-GPU) 5970.

* Secondly, recent AMD slides claimed that the new "4D" shader was "similar in performance" to an old "5D" shader, while taking up 10% less die area. If we (slightly optimistically) take AMDs claim of "similar performance" to mean "equal performance", then this would imply a 25% per-shader improvement. Assuming a perfectly linear performance increase with the number of shaders (again optimistic) along with a full 1920 shader design, we arrive at a 50% improvement over the 5870. This is not enough to account for a 30-40% improvement over the 580, and is computed using an optimistic interpretation of AMDs own claims.

* Finally: I haven't seen anywhere else claiming a performance increase of this magnitude, and the source of this claim is about as dubious as they come!

We will have to wait for the final product, but if it is more than 10% faster than a GTX580 overall then I will be pleasantly surprised. There may well be exceptional circumstances in which the 6970 will perform 30-40% faster than a GTX580, but I highly doubt it will be replicated over a full suite of benchmarks.

AMDs own slides have implied that a 4-cluster design is implemented. This is a change from the 4+1 design that was used in Barts (and Cypress / Juniper).

Hmmm just had a thought, if Raven is telling the truth? Will the 6950 actually be faster than a 580 like early neliz rumours?

If the above is true I doubt we will see a high end dual GPU card from Nvidia either until 28nm...

Thanks Chaps, just from some of the posts by dm, I was getting the impression 69xx was possibly going to maintain 4+1, which threw me a bit.

Thanks chaps :-)
