ATI cuts 6950 allocation

GTX 480 was released at the end of March so hardly a year old and and at 820 Mhz matches the 580. I wish you would stop referring to it as a toaster, I could rub my nuts on it whist playing crysis and it would offer no more than a mild scalding.

Yeah it's been over 15 months since the 5870 and this is the best we got, a card that sometimes faster than a stock 480. Let's hope the reviews prove these Germans can't install drivers properly.

No one gave them the final drivers to install methinks ;)

Okay, Fermi was released 9 months ago but it was 6 months late due to TSMC 40nm process fail.

I own both an ASUS 480 and a Gainward 580 (with a second 580 on the way). My ASUS 480 runs hot, really hot, and the word toaster is accurate. The 580 improvements are very welcome.

Get a new case with some decent airflow, my 480 is sweet as a nut temp wise. You must have had a dodgy HS install or to much or little thermal grease applied. I reseated my HS and applied some Arctic Cooling MX-3, did a great job.

Interesting... so 6970 might really have a possibility to have 1920SP?

I think it's safe to say the 6970 will ship with 1536 SP's.

Earlier slides showed the HD6970 havin 1920 shaders and the HD6990 having 3840 shaders.

well, Unless somthing huge is amiss I think that my dreams of AMD taking the fasted gpu spot is done. It sounds like it may even have a hard time taking on a 570.....Oh how things have changed from 3days ago when raven was 100% sure that the 6970 was 30-40% faster than the 580..

i think theres about a 5 percent chance that the 6970 is a wolf in sheeps clothing...(drivers and bios updates)

do you think there are as we type, AMD lurkers on forums posting a 1 post members posting infos that could hold the key to the answers ?

There was rumors earlier in the week of sample 6970 going around with a crippled SP bios bringing down to 1536. I hope this is the case.

All of the recent benches have been taken with full retail cards. I doubt AMD have borked all of the BIOS's.

Did anyone else notice that before the 6800 release a number of AMD slides were leaked that showed 6870 performance vs 5870 and GTX460. The gains were very impressive and turned out to be true. A very similar set of AMD slides have been leaked for 6900, but for some reason only the relative Tesellation performance vs 5870 have been given. Strange that AMD did not include a GTX480/580 gaming comparison methinks. AMD knows this card sucks, apart from big improvemnts made in the area of tesellation.

If AMD's new tech cannot beat the one year old toaster (GTX480) then it will be a huge fail. If it cannot beat the 580 it is still a fail, even if it does cost substantially less.

I think around 1.4 - 1.6 times the performance of the last round make then reasonably good cards, depending on price obviously.

The GTX580 will probably have to go up against the HD6990, but unless Nvidia dramatically drop the price, and get to the point of actually becoming capable of producing the GTX580 in more than token numbers its hard to consider it competition for anything.

How many benches are there? We should gather up some links in the thread, I barely managed to find some in one thread on that German forum and claims that the other dude has a card as well.

It seems that German dude is the most reliable source so far. He is proven to have the card and so is one other member on the same forum. One of the retailers over there appears to have accidentally shipped cards early. There are other Vantage, Heaven and the odd game benchmark posted all over the net, but none of them are backed up so convincingly.

The only real benchmarks seen so far point to a stinker. It could be poor drivers but I cannot imagine AMD box drivers would be that bad.

:D

How long before that comment about your plums becomes someones sig? :D The best I've seen, sir, (the comment that is. :o).

Can't speak for the 2nd image, but the 1st one appears to be a photoshopped version of another image and shows - tho its hard to tell for certain with the low image quality - signs of editing.

Yeah the 6970 one is a fake but the 6990 looks real, the SP's do not add up with what we are seeing with the 6970.
