ATI cuts 6950 allocation

If they're not using the drivers that allow adjusting the tdp of the card, then they're not getting the full story afaik.

indeed, but this chap did :)

I can confirm the German results are fake.
Well, my 6970 from Sapphire arrived.
They've specifically gave a download exclusively to the latest drivers which truly unlock the performance, and it's beating a stock 580 in Heaven, albeit the max FPS is a little lower.

^^^we will see.
All were seeing is Heaven benchmarks. That is not inspiring confidence.
Yes we get it, the 69 is fast at heaven 2.1.

We need games / 3dmark etc...

he used 4xAF and 0xAA to get that score :/ think the 580 score hes beating used 16xAF and 4xAA, but the drivers are newer than the ones the german lads used

Earlier slides showed the HD6970 havin 1920 shaders and the HD6990 having 3840 shaders.

Going back a fair few pages. Look at the second slide above. (because I don't know if the first is a fake, or a photo of AMD's presentation, so only going by the second slide).

It states the 6990 will have 3840 SP's. Now divide that by two and you get 1920.

Given the historical way of doubling up the chips and that increasing the shader count by two.. I can only really say that whilst it's a leaked slide.. it's AMD's own fault for raising the expectations of the 6950 and 6970 cards.

I think it was either a misdirection (but why would they mislead their AIB's?) OR the 69xx chips are capable of 1920 and have been limited to 1408 and 1536 for some unknown reason. If a 6990 comes out with 3840 processors, it is going to beat the living **** out of the 580. I wonder if they will lower their SP count to 3072 (1536 *2).

What all this suggests to me is that unless they somehow managed to retape and reduce the number of SP's AFTER these slides came out.. those SP's are sat there dormant, and their is a possibility they have pulled a trick like Nvidia, and future 'revisions' will have these enabled? I also wonder if a later driver will enable them, but I doubt that as if may have affected people's purchasing decisions initially.

Also... has anyone actually tried a 6850 BIOS on a 6870, or a 6970 BIOS on a 6950 ?

I think the key question here is.. how old are those slides, and did AMD have enough time to reduce the number of SP's in time for release/production from 1920 to 1536? ( I would also ask whether 1920 was the expected number of cores BEFORE they decided to 'uncore' and do 4 SP's rather than 4+1 ?)
