ATI Driver Install FUBAR

I had a problem with a new installation of FSX, whereby it could not detect a graphics card, but all other games seemed to work at my normal resolution of 1440x900 - everything seemed fine, apart from FSX.

So I thought, I know, I'll wipe all the drivers and install freshly downloaded driver package from ATI website (following this). All was going well until it came to reinstalling the driver itself, I get an error message saying "Driver Install: a parameter is incorrect." (or something very similar).

Now I'm stuck on 800x600 with no drivers at all!!! I've tried downloading and installing the driver on its own, without CCC but get the same thing.

This is a 4850 by the way.

Any ideas?:confused:

Lol at the date of that link on how to install Ati drivers

Ati, or AMD as they are now called, have drivers that are now supposed to be installed over the top of the previous drivers.

On that link you posted it says to do this to uninstall driver but why would you do that

5. Next...time to go to your Registry. Go to START -- RUN -- regedit

Here go to key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -- SYSTEM -- ControlSet001 -- Control -- Video . Here there should be 4 entries. 3 of them are default Windows XP entries and the 4th one is put in by the ATI drivers. Expand each one by one until you see ATI entries. Once found, erase the entire key.

Now repeat the same step above for the ControlSet002 key and the CurrentControlSet Key. Normally, whenever you erase a key in the ControlSet001, XP automatically deletes it in the CurrentControlSet section too. So if the ATI key is not found in the CurrentControlSet section, don't worry about it.
Once all keys are deleted, proceed to the next step.

6. While still in the registry, go to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -- SOFTWARE section. Here you should find an ATI Technologies key. Select it and delete it. In that same section, look for an Installed Options key. Expand it and there you should find another ATI Technologies key. Select it and erase it.

7. Still in the registry, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER -- Software and there you should find another ATI technologies key. Select it and erase it. Once all this is done, close the registry. the registry is now clean.

Lol, just lol. All you needed to do was download new drivers then install new drivers. Job done. Looks like you may have messed up something in the registry so it may be that the easy fix is to re-install windows and start again or you could maybe try and repair the registry.

FUUUUU. Pure desperation and 3/4hours of trying to get FSX going lured me into trying anything to get it to work, so I guess I wasnt paying attention to what I was reading. I was going to upgrade my card to a better Nvidia one, so seems like that is my next step then.

Just tried doing it through Windows, tries to install but says failed at the end with a similar message "The parameter is incorrect"

Ok what card do you have and what operating system.

Edit: Just found this, maybe its related. Worth a shot

This issue affects the following system configurations:

* Windows XP
* ATI CATALYST driver suite

Some users have reported that when trying to install the ATI Software, the following error message will appear:

"The Parameter is incorrect"

Not all systems are affected.

Allowing Full Control to the ATI Technologies registry key has been shown to address this symptom. To enable Full Control, perform the following steps:

Warnings:

The steps to configure the Windows Registry are provided AS IS and are NOT supported.
We strongly advise that you backup your system and any important data.

For more information, please see Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry.

To backup the Windows Registry,

1. Click START, select RUN, and type "REGEDIT"
2. From the menu bar, choose 'Registry', then 'Export'. Save the registry backup file to your desktop. Double-clicking the saved file will allow you to reverse any incorrect changes made to the registry.

To perform the changes,

* Click on the (+) icon next to the word "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"
* Click on the (+) icon next to the word "Software"
* Right click on the "ATI Technologies" registry key
* Select Permissions
* Check Allow "Full Control"
* Click Apply and reinstall the ATI software
