Often browsing, but not limited to, the internet. The desktop will stop responding, only the mouse will move around, 5 seconds later I get a black screen and it comes back to say the graphics driver has recovered.

It is a new ATI card, maybe a month old, but I had the same problems with an Nvidia card before it. This is a fresh install of Windows 7 retail, I was previously running RC. The problems occurred before and after reinstall.

There are LOTS of threads on the internet with people having this problem for years, but I can find no clear answer as to why it happens.

I tried uninstalling CCC and disabling windows aero etc but still I get the error, albeit not as much. At one point it probably crashed every 10 seconds until I disabled windows aero, and I thought that had fixed it, but it occurred again later.

What card are you having the problem with? I get this with my 5770 and assume it's down to drivers. It did it to me on Vista 64 and now on a fresh install of Windows 7 64.

I recently had a bout of this on my card windows 7RC - Not had it yet on Win 7 HP

What i did

Reinstall official release AMD/Radeon drivers.
Reinstall DirectX

Took the side panel off my old case - the thing was like an oven.

I was inclined to think it was a heat issue in my case.

Theres not much you can do .

Oh and i am overclocking CPU and Card.

I can seem to game fine, it's just desktop crashes so far.. maybe I'll just keep my ear to the ground and see how it goes.

Maybe I'll reset the bios, once upon a time I had a go at overclocking, but the board isn't really made for it.. I wonder if I put the settings back properly.

i get this a lot with my 5850...

i can't seem to fix it...

the weird thing is when gaming its perfectly fine..

ive had it a few time when using sketchup in Win7, I put it down to dodgy open GL drivers but tbh its stopped doing it since I started to run SU as administrator.

Uninstalled all ATI components, CCC + driver

downloaded latest driver only, installed and it seems to be ok!! I've read here and there CCC causes it

Weird how so many suddenly developed RAM problems when buying 5xxx series cards.

Mate of mine is reporting issue now when trying to play he new Batman game.
Grey screen, needs reboot to recover.
Something crappy going on for sure

I had the same with my 8800.

It's only when I upgraded to Vista it started happening. It's like Vista finds errors you never knew you had. It might be to do with the fact a lot of people are jumping from XP to W7 that you're seeing it more.
