ATI driver/software makes Vista unable to shut down

installed new CCC drivers, now, whenever i go to shut down my computer, it will hang on "Shutting down". The loading icon still turns though, implying it hasn't frozen. It just doesn't shut down at all. I tried uninstalling and going back to 8.10 but the problem still persists. I had real trouble installing all the drivers/software (a lot of INF errors).

So in conclusion, ATI driver/software are stopping vista from shutting down. Any ideas on how i can fix this?

EDIT:

i have a 4870x2
vista ultimate x64

Did you use DriverSweeper to uninstall the previous drivers as that can cause problem with some setups doing so.

yes I did, what should I do to correct my ways
btw, vista is able to shut down if the ATI drivers/software aren't installed

Just use the ATI uninstaller as im sure they know how to uninstall the drivers.
And manually delete C:ATI / reboot & reinstall.

How long have you left it? Sometimes after installed new video drivers my PC takes 15 minutes to shut down.

Guys, Atis's Vista drivers are designed to remove the old ones and install the new ones in one click. So you can just run the new driver install package without uninstalling the old ones first. Vista was originally touted as being able to update drivers without even needing a reboot but Ati and Nvidia haven't been able to get this to work properly.

Driversweeper causes me these kinds of problems as it must remove registry entries that the OS needs to keep track of hardware changes, thus causes install errors.

Yes & it differers from set-up to set-up & from driver set to driver set & that's why some people don't get a problem using DS with one set of drivers then out of the blue it becomes one with a new set.

DS has become a routine that people have gotten into Unnecessarily with out even trying to see if the ATI uninstaller & reinstall works first.

DS should be the last resort not the first.

ok, so you guys thing a system restore should fix it? Too bad I don't think i have a system restore (unless one was made as soon as I got my new PC)
Is there any way to get it working without having to reinstall (i want to keep the files on my hard drive).
Or would going into device manager, and uninstalling the display adapter (i think that's what its called), and then installing using the drivers off my disk (which are 8.10) help it?

The restore should be there unless you turned it off.
