They're professional design cards, with a higher emphasis on design, precision and build quality, and drivers tailored for the job and programmes used. Basically ATI's version of Nvidias Quadro platform.

If you dont know what they're for, then you don't need one, goes well with this sort of card :)
 
Our Solidworks vendor is currently using the FireGL cards in their machines. Previously it would have been a no brainer to just stick with the Quadros due to the performance advantage they had.

Have ATI now closed the gap?
Never a fan of the Solidworks forums for this one as it seems almost more fanboy-ish than is "normal". 1 bad experience years ago = manufacturer is rubbish... That kind of thing... :D
