ATI FPS capping

Hi All, i wonder if anyone can help or advise me on my querie. I have a opteron 165 clocked to 2.7 ghz, no prblems, always runs amazing, and i have a ati 4850 graphics cards. When i run FRAPS to benchmark my games and check my FPS it always seems like my frames are capped.EG - i can run quske 3 at 800 by 600 or i can run quake 3 at 1280 by 1024 and i stilll get 91 fps. Same in cod4, no matter what i do at any res, i still get the same results.How can i "unlock" or "uncap" my ATI 4850. PS- i have turned offf the vertical sync and im running the latest 8.6 CATALYST drivers. Thanks for your advise guys......

Most games have a console command to raise max fps this is different on most games try typing maxfps quake into google

Oh right, ok, thanks. I only play quake 1,2 and 3, cod 4 and vice city multiplayer. Everything seems capped. When i have an nvidia card all i had to do was turn the v-snyc off, then it ran faster. I will try that though, thanks.

All Cod games are capped at 85 (shows as 91 in fraps for some reason) regardless of whether your using an Nvidia or ATI card.

To change the cap to what ever number you like bring down the console and type:

/com_maxfps

Awwww, ok. Thanks, i wondered if it was just me being so used to my old 7950 gx2 nvidia card. I will keep fiddling and see what happens.Im so impressed with this 4850, its so fast. Thanks for your advise, i will post back.

Use /com_maxfps 333 but if any servers say that your FPS are too high then use /com_maxfps 200 (recommended lowest is 125).

Yay !!!!! I get 80 fps at 2056 by 1536 at 70 hz on my old opteron 165 system running at 2.7 ghz in COD4. Now i just gotta find a way to check quake 1 and 2. Thanks guys, thanks for your advise and time.

200 frames it is, thanks again. Im wondering just what this card can do, its a lot faster than my 7950 gx2. I hope they bring out some 3rd party coolers soon, this one runs 70c at idle and 70-83 on full load.

cl_maxfps is the command for Quake 1 & 2

With an 8800gt I get 1000 FPS in Q2, but only about 300 with a 3870, guess its just the ATI drivers that aren't optimised for older GL games

My 4870 was iding at 74c with the fan at default (20%), but since setting it to 37% I've never seen temps go higher than 46c idle/55c load, it's still nice and quiet as well.

Thanks guys, i guess im so used to nvidia, ive been with them for 9 years now.A friend of mine bought me my card ( a freeby ) and im really pleased with how it performs.I always got 936 fps with quake 2, but now its only 600 with this ati 4850, but the game is silky smooth and looks amazing.I cant wait to corss fire this baby oneday, but to do that i will need to change my board, as im running it on an a8n32 sli deluxe
